#Throwback to Nov 11th 2018 when I ran the #AthensAuthenticMarathon in memory of my Dad, who sadly took his own life on May 25th this year, after battling depression for 4 years. Running the authentic marathon course in honor of a former professional athlete like him, just a day after what would have been his 70th birthday, not only made perfect sense to me. I absolutely had to do it. And he ran along with me ❤ I felt his presence throughout the marathon. At one particularly tough moment when I'd lost my energy and drive and was trudging up a hilly part of the course, it was so surreal when, out of nowhere, I felt like someone gave me a strong push in the back - almost felt it physically!!! Next thing I know - I'm literally flying full of energy again... I knew then that it was him. I looked up, smiled and whispered "thank you Dad!"
So this was my 8th marathon...and forever the most memorable of them all. I will never forget approaching the finish line in the spectacular Panathenaic Stadium... A second before crossing that finish line I looked up again, whispered "this was for YOU, Dad", then promptly broke into tears, overwhelmed with both emotional pain and a long-needed feeling of liberation...
Dad, this really was for you. I know how much you wanted to run in the past year when we talked about what beautiful therapy running is and how it does wonders to mental health... You wanted to run again so badly it broke my heart when you told me you had tried to run but couldn't really go long... Parkinson's was failing your body, despite all your never-ending drive and will to fight...
I know that wherever you are now, you are running again like you used to ❤ Run in peace, Dad ❤ And I will run for you here in this life. Every single marathon. You will be with me in spirit, and I will be your legs - albeit far not as fast as yours, after all I'm just a humble amateur runner paying tribute to a great pro runner - the best Dad ever and my all-time inspiration ❤
