In running, there are 2 basic fuels (fats and carbohydrates)...these are also called ENERGY SUBSTRATES (they can be broken down to release energy). Proteins also very important however provide little energy use for metabolism. How food end up providing energy for running? Well, carbs and fats or energy substrates are composed of molecular bonds. The energy in foods molecular bonds is chemically released within our cells and then stored in the form of something called ATP (adenosine triphosphate, a high energy compound). The immediately available source of energy for almost all bodily functions including muscle contraction (for exercise) is ATP. Cells can stored very limited amounts of ATP and must constantly generate new ATP to provide energy. Cells generate ATP through a combination of three metabolic pathways called ENERGY SYSTEMS: The oxidative system (the one that requires oxygen and comprises the AEROBIC METABOLISM), the glycolytic system (Glycolysis) and the ATP-Phosphocreatine (these two systems can act in the absence of oxygen and are jointly called the ANAEROBIC METABOLISM). Endurance sports like long distance running relies heavily on the oxidative system. It’s the most complex of the 3 as generates energy through cellular respiration and occurs in special cell organelles called MITOCHONDRIA. It’s is also the one that provides more ATP, therefore more energy. This is why, it should be one of the energy systems we should optimize for endurance running. How do we do that??? I’ll explain it in the next few posts.

FAST FRIDAY! 🏃‍♀️💨 Surprised myself this morning with how good I felt during my efforts. 😁 Kept telling myself “If you can run non-stop for 14km at City2Surf with lots of hills & manage a 5:20min average pace, then you can run faster here on the flat”. 👌🏼 It worked! Be relentless!! This doesn’t just pertain to sports; it speaks to all walks of life!
While being strong, or good at what you do attains results, that only keeps you competing with the competition. Whether that’s in the diamond, at the office or wherever. You don’t wanna compete, you wanna stand out! You wanna be the best.... By being smart-educating yourself, reading, taking action....you start to separate yourself from the crowd. But being smart isn’t enough. Others are smart too...and you’re stilled in the midst of others.
Be relentless in your pursuit of your goals. Be “oppressively constant” in your actions to achieve that which you hope to achieve. This is the action where most of us fall short- the relentless drive to achieve. It can be tough to go all in all the time. BUT, when you become relentless in the pursuit of your goals, you truly separate yourself from those around you.
So, don’t settle for being “good” be relentless and become the best!

The limits of endurance performance
Samuele Marcora from the School of Sport and Exercise Sciences in Kent University have extensively researched about the limits of endurance performance in humans. Are we limited by our own muscles or by our own mind? Does people stop due to muscle fatigue?
Yes it is true there is muscle fatigue but there is still some muscle reserve to keep going.
Professor Marcora has found that the limiting factor seems to be the mind and specifically, the perception of effort (PE). This is the conscious sensation of how hard, difficult, heavy and strenuous exercise or a physical task is (psychological suffering).
So muscle is NOT the limiting factor in endurance but the mind. The progressive increase in perception of effort is depending on muscle fatigue as we compensate muscle fatigue by exerting more effort (as muscle gets weaker). There are several factors that can affect perception of effort: mental fatigue (increase PE), self talk (decrease PE), etc. So
1. Avoiding mental fatigue (sleep deprivation, mentally taxing tasks like video games or trying to control emotions)
2. Systematic use of psychological skills (motivational self talk, goal setting, imagery)
3. Use of caffeine and tyrosine have shown to reduce PE.
4. Brain stimulation and endurance training (lots of research going on in this topic).
Marcora’s research is the proposed psychobiological model of endurance fatigue and has contributed to understand endurance performance better. Exhaustion is NOT the ability to continue, it’s basically giving up as fatigue is not only caused by physiological limits.

Remember why we love to run. Running is part of our lifestyle, we run when we are happy, sad, hyper, tired, etc. We are all going to have up and down days, we just have to hope we have more up days. Back to the hills today 👍😁. Slight detour to the Standing Stone 😲. 12.6KM/7.8mile in total.

Yet again I messed up with the TomTom but this time I have a mitigating reason....... I saved a cow 🐮⁉️ Well saved might be stretching it a bit... 🤔 but I stopped it from eating a plastic water bottle! 😠

It's not only the ocean's that have plastic dumped into them. Why does someone walk 2 miles up a mountain just to discard a plastic water bottle? 😡

What works for them may not work for you, and what doesnt work for them may work perfect for you. Running is all about learning about yourself, physically and mentally. I strongly believe in Running Coaches, and the best Running Coach will guide you, strengthen you, and teach you, BUT they will NEVER force you. Got in a little back and bi work this morning... What a great, quick workout!
Only 37 minutes and I’m scorched every bit as much as when I’d spend an hour and a half plus in the gym powerlifting...🏋️️‍♂️ It’s great to be able to get such an overall workout in so short a time. Keeps my day free for the more important things in life...like hunting!!

Tuesday Track Day turned into Run Around the Block Day and try to lap the speedwalking 70 year old ladies. Did 2.4 warm up miles, then 4 Progression 1600s: 6:40, 6:31, 6:26, 5:58. .6 Cool down to get a total of 7 miles for the day!! My 1600 repeats should be closer to 6:00/6:15 but I'm just easing back into speed and this is week 3!!! New client, Helen, started the couch to 5k programme with me last week, and has already made outstanding progress.

We're running together twice a week and Helen is running alone once a week in between our sessions.

Today was run three of week one, and Helen has already increased her average pace. Helen also knocked off 31 seconds off her time on a local Strava segment!

Three variations of one of my go to #stretches. I like the #hipflexor to warmup before a #run and certain #lifts.
In fact the last one I stole from one of @syattfitness articles about bench pressing and will be trying it out to see if it helps.😁 * Foot firmly planted into ground, don't rock through it like I did. Oops! * Keep core engaged and pelvis underneath you. * I usually will do about 10 reps or 30 seconds.

- a 7 week 5km running program ( 7 weeks from couch to 5km)

Love these cutie pies! Got to head out for a run tonight while the kiddos had dinner with daddy. Was really happy with the cooler temps today and finally got in some quicker splits. 2.14 miles @ 9:08 avg. Felt really good tonight so definitely excited about the cooler temps predicted for next week. Still can’t believe how well my cross-training has maintained my running fitness. Super excited! Slowly but SURELY increasing my weekly mileage.
