Part of my landscape for the past 1.5 years has been protest signs. I can’t make a sign big enough though to represent how furious and heartbroken I am about the current treatment of our undocumented community members. FAMILIES BELONG TOGETHER. What Republicans are doing is completely inhumane and unethical. They are separating infants and toddlers from their parents, causing irreparable trauma. They have built special detention centers for “tender age” kids because there are so many of them (from 1-12 years old, BABIES!!). Guards have been instructed not to comfort or hold crying children. Then they have the audacity to blame Obama and Democrats for it when, A) republicans have all the power, hold all the key offices (Obama is in fact, NOT in office), they could stop it If they wanted to; B) Democrats never did this!!! Yesterday the US actually withdrew from the UN Human Rights Council!
I’m not so naive to think that the US has a history of freedom and equality, that has not been the case for the indigenous folks we slaughtered to steal this land, for the African slaves that built this country, for basically any early non-English immigrant group, for women, for the Japanese citizens we sent to internment camps, for the vets we send to fight our wars but then leave on the streets to suffer from the mental health issues they got from fighting those wars, for black folks that are being killed by police with impunity, for gay folks that just want to get married to the person they love, for trans folks who just want to go to the bathroom... This is what we’ve always done. But before Trump I thought we were on the *long* path to getting better.
We might have different political beliefs but there is no moral argument for the administration’s recent actions. None. So I hope everyone will join me on June 30th to protest families being separated. There are events across the country, find yours and SHOW UP (I’ll put the link in my bio). If you have Republican senators, call them every-damn-day. They are finally starting to get nervous realizing that most of us are horrified by what is happening and maybe they won’t get reelected, so keep the pressure up!
