Content Warning: #Homophobia, Violence.
New York City, Friday June 22, 2018.
I am absolutely sickened with our @uber driver’s statements. I apologize if this is triggering to some, and warn you about what you’re about to read / watch.
During the month of June “it is a movement that celebrates sexual diversity. For #lesbian, #gay, #bisexual and #transgender (#LGBT) people it is a way of protesting about #discrimination and #violence. It promotes their #dignity, equal #rights, #self-affirmation and is a way of increasing society’s #awareness of the issues they face.” - Awareness Days UK
We drove by a group of 4 individuals dressed up in outfits for #pride. Driving up to them the #Uber driver said “what the fuck is that?!” In which my partner replied with “what is what?” The driver replied with “what’s that!” Pointing to the group of people. We replied with “what’s wrong with that?” acknowledging who he was speaking about. The driver asked us “you know what I do with those? I burn those alive”. That’s when I pulled out my phone and recorded a video confirming what he said he would do. I wish I reacted in time to record from the beginning - but I just did not expect something like this to be said.
This is why Pride month exists. This is why we still need to push for acceptance, because homophobia is still very alive. Do not ask me why we don’t have a “straight pride month” - because this is exactly why. Heterosexual people don’t face discrimination based on their sexuality on a day to day basis. Fearing for their #equality, #safety, and lives.
I have a very heavy heart tonight and am still in shock, on edge, and still feeling nauseous while typing this. I wish I had been more brave to speak out against him but was also afraid for both of our safety if I had asked him what he believed my sexual orientation to be.
Not something we should have had to expect while waiting for our driver, watching his vehicle icon on the Uber app map drive down a rainbow road. #Disappointed with Uber’s #performative #allyship.
