The thing is .. having trust in your trainer is vital. You’re trusting them to look after you. To have your best interests at heart. You’re trusting them to keep an eye out for you and spot how to help. To give encouragement when you need it, to pick you up when you fall and to whoop for joy when you accomplish new things.
My goal is to find the individual in each of you and bring you together as a group to enjoy your workouts together. To build a community that we can all rely on.

MOVEMENT BREAKDOWN: The Sandbag Carry

Sandbags can effectively be used for “carries” and “holds”; types of movement within the frontal plane rarely seen in traditional training programs but are frequently seen in real life. We all agree that sandbag training is 100x more awkward than a bench press… But so is moving a fridge, carrying bags of cement, pushing a wheelbarrow, and wrestling a drunk ****. This is the magic of sandbag training... Their use carries over to the real world far, far better than a barbell or some cable / pulley contraption.

I’m encouraged to see people realizing how mobility and #strengthtraining are actually more closely related than many thought. Many times the most efficient way to improve #flexibility and movement is by focusing on connecting the body and waking up many of the #core stabilizers that get shut off from injury and lack of use. 👩‍⚕️However prepping the body shouldn’t take over your training building smarter #warmup and corrective exercise drills is to get your program more efficient, this Ultimate #sandbag combo is a great example. First trying to work external rotation of the hip I create tension in the opposite arm because the lats and #glutes are connected. So improving the hips means stimulating core and lats.

Then I want to reinforce the new mobility with the stability of our Bird Dog Lateral Drag. This is how we get the body truly ready for real world fitness. Still train hard but also train smart!!!

I really hope we can get to a point where the difference between corrective exercise and strength work can’t really be separated. After all, if it isn’t corrective, then what is it? The truth is that a lot of people do end up performing workouts and exercises that either undo what their corrective work was trying to accomplish, or completely contradicts it.

1️⃣ As I have gone through my own rehab process, I’ve become even more strong minded that strength is really about making connections in the body. Learning how not to just make our bodies work hard and abuse them, but rather understanding how they work and connecting the chains of the body that make us do complex actions so seamless. We can still train smart AND hard.

2️⃣ These activation exercises may seem confusing at first, but if we delve deeper we begin to see how much they sense and why they might work better! Performing a lift/chop Press Out with a lateral band walk connects the obliques and adductors, the quadratus lumborum with the opposing glute medius, and of course, the lats, core, and #glutes . The lift/chop has been used in PNF for decades to connect the core so why don’t we use it in more dynamic exercises? The Press Out helps because I still can’t go overhead, but the tension of ripping the Ultimate #Sandbag apart and driving out from the body is like a dynamic #plank .

3️⃣ Using a modified Pallof Press (made better by including grip that is correlated to our shoulder and core) from a half kneeling position I get to practice creating force in the ground which ties in the glutes and core from the ground up. Combining this anti-rotational core exercise in half kneeling (that makes us resist the lateral and transverse planes) makes brining in the ability to lunge well so much easier. By activating the connecting muscles of the body we actually get better use of the hips.

4️⃣ The #kettlebell lateral lunge with low flye with the bands might make people wonder what I’m training. The lateral lunge allows me to train dynamic lateral mobility in the lower body, especially the hip joint. The kettlebell allows me to create tension to enhance core

It is crazy to think that as popular as glute training is in fitness right now, most people are just throwing the kitchen sink at the glutes calling it effective. That is sad because working the body hard doesn’t mean you are making the body better. If you want results, even when it comes to the #glutes , you have to know how the glutes are suppose to work and how smarter exercises can create faster and better results.

1️⃣ Our glutes are connected to the action of our feet. While #hipthrusts can build a baseline with being on the ground, they don’t challenge our glutes to the highest levels because our body is made to move in life and in life we move by standing on our feet. Even on the hip bridge teaching people to drive into their feet instead of lifting with their hips will create more glute and core strength. @dvrtfitness_uk shows a smarter way to perform hip bridges by connecting the core with the grip and lifts/chops of the Ultimate #Sandbag . The @perform_better mini band around the feet while marching reinforces driving the feet while also challenging the glutes to work not allowing unwanted movement side to side.

2️⃣ Teaching the glutes to work synergistically with the core, hamstrings, feet, and even the lats allows us to develop a body that performs as well as it looks! What the great #DVRT exercises that @rachcosgrove , @bryannnnamarie , @larisalotz show is how we use the dynamic nature of stepping and acceleration to challenge stability of the pelvis and especially the glutes and core. Learning to accelerate, decelerate, change direction, be powerful, be stable, are the attributes of the glutes that we just don’t talk enough about!

3️⃣ If we want to develop a body that can live strong, then we have to realize how the body works. Ignoring the function of the body is what can limit us in the results we can achieve in the #gym as well as how resilient we can be to injury. Using #functionalfitness is not a buzzword to perform novel exercises, but rather drills that help teach the body to perform the way it was designed to work in life! That’s how we get the results that really matter!
