So many travel articles talk up the city of San Miguel de Allende in Guanajuato state as THE place to visit for foreign travelers.
Yes, it is a pretty colonial city ... just like the many other México colonial cities such as Morelia, Zacatecas, Queretaro, Guanajato, San Luis Potosi, Puebla, Cuernavaca, and Oaxaca.
The BIG difference is, since San Miguel de Allende has gotten all this publicity, EVERYONE wants to go (including Mexican national tourists). EVERYONE = Travel jams on the weekends, parking lots full, and in general ... too many tourists. On the weekends, it's like a cruise ship came into the port of this city (no, SMDA is not on the ocean). Soooo ... go on a weekday, park outside the city, and walk to the central area.
Or .... make plans to explore some of the many other México colonial cities. They are just as nice and not so crowded.
Photo: This is the original main church of SMDA. You won't find it in what's now the downtown area.
