It took me 8.5 hours to get these DNA samples ready to run on a gel today, and then another hour to run the gel. 😴
.
It was worth it to get some good results though! 😁

#parasitescanbecutetoo This is one of my most unusual yet most treasured commissions yet! The wonderful family of Professor Robet Poulin thought it would be a cool idea to get the six parasites that are named after him drawn up as a Cheistmas gift; and I did too! Robert is one of the world's leading experts on parasite ecology and evolution, and still somehow finds the time to lecture at Otago. I was lucky enough to be lectured by the man himself, and just as lucky to work with his two lovely sons. I don't know enough about these parasites to give you the classic blurb, but I do know that parasites are freaking cool. Sometimes a little bit gross, but the more you learn about them the more fascinating they get! 🌱🐛#parasites #creepycrawlies #trematodes #newzealand #nature #wildlife #nz #nznature #newzealandart #nzartists #nzart #conservation #animals #illustration #drawing #sketch #science #sciencecommunication #dunedin #protect #environment #blackandwhite #dotwork #pointilism #cute

Seventh scientist: Helen Butler
Helen is studying the amphibian microbiome, which may relate to disease mitigation.
Her hobby is to paint/draw! Helen has started since she was a little kid. She was even thinking about applying to art school.
In a year from now, Helen says she plans to apply to many different jobs in a range of fields: functional ecology field research, Fish & Wildlife, even biomedical research.
Helen would tell 10yr old self to be incredibly confident in your interests and to not give a f*** about what other kids think. She remembers not pursuing her interests due to what other people thought, but it took a while to come back to full circle. Stay true to yourself. #scicomm #sfsuscicomm #sfsu #biology #sciencecommunication #science #sciencecommunity #womenscientist

Jacky is a microbiologist currently looking as using good bacteria as a method of biocontrol to fight against food borne pathogens.
Jacky likes to mentally and physically prepare for Spartan Races, which has numerous obstacles and can range from 3-31 miles and different conditions.
A year from now Jacky sees himself done with his Master’s and conquering the next spartan race course. If he can go back and talk to his 10yr old self he was say that it is okay to be different and be yourself. All the while, having fun and taking your education seriously. #scicomm #sfsuscicomm #sfsu #biology #sciencecommunication #science #sciencecommunity #microbiologist

The first day of the @britishecolsoc conference kicked off with an excellent welcome mixer. As the only committee member from the Tropical Ecology Group able to attend, I was a tad lonely... for about 5 minutes. My past brand ambassador skills kicked in and I essentially harassed everyone who walked past into talking to me. I got a lot of people to sign up! So I’m pretty happy with that, and had the privilege of talking to a lot of interesting people doing amazing research. So excited to attend talks, poster sessions, and the social tomorrow! See what else I got up to in my stories 😊

Growing up, I always thought of kelp as the slimey stuff under my feet in the water and nothing more. In reality, giant kelp (seen here) is the base of ecosystem here on the Pacific Coast. They are the ocean counterpart to redwoods in the forest, growing taller than any algae on earth. Giant kelp supports all the other organisms in our ocean with habitat and food. Warm water, decreased urchin predator populations, and invasive algae have all been a serious challenge for kelp in southern California.
The cycle of kelp flourishing in winter and struggling in summer is more extreme than it was when I was young. Some places that always had kelp almost never have it now, so it warmed my heart to see @owuss_ scholar @__livjohnson swimming among young kelp just starting to sprout up in November at @channelislandsnps . Fun fact, you can tell these kelp plants haven't been here too long as they only have a few stipes (or trunks if they were trees) each.

Crystallization series - Part 2 - Sarah Hutcheson

Evaporative crystallization

Evaporation is the phase change of a substance from solid or liquid to a gaseous or vapor state. A vapor differs from a gas because it can describe a mixture of multiple phases at room temperature, most commonly - a gas and liquid. Some substances can undergo what’s called sublimation, where a vapor phase is achieved from solids that do not first turn to liquids before vaporizing. The rate of evaporation is defined by the temperature required to change the state of a substance.

Typical crystallization procedure requires the substance to be crystallized in a supersaturated mixture that it is soluble (or, dissolvable) in. Supersaturation is the condition in which a solvent contains more dissolved matter than could be dissolved by the solvent at a constant temperature. Basically- so much solute is added that the solvent could not possibly dissolve all of it. Crystallization in a sense, is the complete opposite of super saturation, the goal is to evaporate the excess liquid and solidify the remaining undissolved solute.

So, how do we remove liquid solvents in a solution without disturbing solids? Generally, by increasing temperature! Once the mixture is heated beyond the solubility point, the solvent will evaporate, and a solid product precipitate remains. Much like boiling salt water to obtain sea salt.

Changes in temperature are not always required, however. Outside of synthetic methods and laboratory procedure, an example of evaporative crystallization as a natural phenomenon is when raw honey granulates, or, crystallizes in its jar. Honey is considered an over-saturated sugar solution and differences in solubility causes separation to occur as water partially evaporates out.

Future: Artificial intelligence in healthcare? 👩‍⚕️
.
Hello guys, L went to an Artificial intelligence conference two days ago in Lisbon. It was the 12th edition ! 🌍
.
The usual topics were approached but in this post we want to talk about the role of #artificialintelligence in #healthcare!
.
AI can help us accelerate the diagnosis to prognosis process and use lots of data through machine learning programs to optimize healthcare services! For instances, there are machines at the moment that diagnose some diseases better than doctors! And also, imagine that all medical related data were fed to a machine which could learn from it and create patterns and improve logistics...soon programs could schedule doctors and nurses using this intelligence taking into consideration high pick seasons like extreme heat season of floo season! .
Interesting right? What conferences have you attended lately?

Sixth scientist: Diana Ramirez
She’s an undergraduate scientist studying biochemistry. Diana plays the trumpet in the Afro-Cuban Ensemble. She started in first grade in a school assembly and chose the trumpet due to her Hispanic background. Diana begged her parents to play it and her parents saved to purchase her own trumpet.
A year from now, Diana sees herself applying for graduate school and medical and start a whole new chapter of my life.
She would tell her 10yr old self to continue to pursue my own dreams and to not let anyone deter you from that pathway. That can happen if you put the work and effort into what you want. #scicomm #sfsuscicomm #sfsu #biology #sciencecommunication #science #sciencecommunity #sciencecomm #sfsubio #chemistry #sfsuchem #womanscientist #latinascientist #latinxscientist
