Thank you @natgeo & photographers @kchete77 & @ivankphoto for capturing & sharing our traditional #postpartum #sealingceremony
Cuarentena is a time when a woman is in her most time of need from her family and community. Birthing new life comes with lots of ups and downs physically and mentally, therefor Full rest is highly needed to allow proper healing of the body and the mind. In some parts of mexico it is seen as a time where a woman has one foot in life and another foot in death.. this care comes from the fragileness of our wombs after we give birth. Meaning we are one step away form death,(& its true) if a woman slips and falls after givien birth she automatically can hemmorhoige and put her life at risk of death. Which also coincide with western medicine post partum care.
So again, Cuarentena (the first 40 days after given birth) is a time where a woman is well taken care of by her family and community through healing healthy warming foods, massages, herbal baths, breastfeeding support, conversations, baby care, house cleaning, taking care of other siblings, etc. its a time honored to the birthing woman, 40 days of love healing nourishment and support, will prepare a mother to fully embrace her new motherhood role.
This motherhood role is constantly learned in her cuarentena. When a woman is cared in her cuarentena, it allows her that quality time to learn & grow with her baby and her new body. Creating that bonding time that is crucial for mothers and newborns.
The cuarentena is also very specific to heat and warmth in our bodies. bodies do not allow coldness to enter, coldness can be through stepping on a cold floor/ cold air breeze, cold foods, etc. this is what is called "aire en el cuerpo" which is also part of protecting the mother in her cuarentena. At the end of our cuarentena is where our final care is perfomed with a Sealing Ceremony. (Picture shown)
Usually performed by the elder woman in the community/ parteras/ spiritual healers, curanderas etc.. in a sweatlodge setting. Honoring the mama with a Vaginal steam, herb bath, full body massage, body bone closure "cerreda de huesos", & a womb massage.
