I started selling my clothes from our 600sf apartment in Boston in 2014 one month after we got married. We were leaving for a medical mission trip in Guatemala in 3 months and footing the entire bill. It was being ‘considered’ as our honeymoon BUT was costing about 2.5x more than our African honeymoon would have. .
So in an effort to reduce clutter, flip my closet, and make some money for the trip... I took a gamble on a new app selling my clothes. Almost 5 years later, I’m one of their Top 10% sellers and an ambassador. Without getting too personal - there’s a comma involved in what I’ve made so far. .
Here’s how it works - you post your item for sale. Let’s call this a Jcrew Dress. You paid $65 for... ideally you would want that when selling. That is never going to happen. So typically if you list at 10-15% of original purchase price for used clothing. Higher end goods are closer to 35-50%. Luxury goods are 70%. So you list the dress for $8-10 - you take the photos on your phone. Post on the app. Describe the item. Once it sells, print the label and package in any packaging. Drop off within 3 days to a USPS facility and you’re paid when the buyer accepts the item or 5 days passes, whichever happens first. .
When listing - I would much rather list an item $2 cheaper and have it sell in 3 days than have it sit for 2 weeks. There is an offer feature - buyers can make a binding offer. I accept all reasonable offers. Once again, I would rather sell it. You can also offer ‘bundle discounts’ - it is wise to do this as the shipping is flat rate. So buyers pay the same shipping fee for a T-shirt as they do a shirt and five pairs of jeans. So offering 10% off the bundle tends to have people purchase more... .
I tend to do well selling the following- clothing, shoes, purses and coats. Brands: Jcrew, gap, loft, banana, old navy, Tory Burch, coach, Talbots, vineyard vines, Ralph Lauren, Michael Kors, sports wear, maternity, Chico’s, Ann taylor, Golf clothes, bridesmaid dresses, Lilly Pulitzer and more! Children’s clothing did not sell well for me personally and selling my husbands clothes did not either. That does not mean those won’t work for you!
