Cinematografo ambulante - Francia 191?

1

"I Cinematografi viaggianti sono esistiti molto prima dei permanenti e esisteranno sino a che questa industria darà dei guadagni, e se attualmente esiste il permanente lo deve al cinema viaggiante, perché siamo stati noi i primi a portarlo da una città all'altra, di modo che i permanenti hanno copiato da noi e non noi da loro. "
Taddeo Kullman, Cafè-Chantant 1908

Beatrice Dominguez, Rudy’s Tango partner in TFHOTA also starred with Art Acord ”The King of the Cowboys” in ”The White Horseman” a Universal serial in 1921. The working title was ”Opals of Evil.” Theater owners were encouraged to give away a real opal ring as a publicity stunt for the picture. The serial was based on the legend of a tribe of Indians in San Pedro who lived inside a mountain from which they left to tend their fields through a cunningly concealed door, they returned by night and closed the door behind them. ”Wayne Allen, a young Westerner, is willed a section of apparently worthless land. On the day the deeds are recorded he receives a mysterious message fastened to the handle of a sheath knife, warning him to stay away from the ranch. Allen feels that this indicates there is something at the ranch worthwhile and he sets out to investigate.

Living in the shack on his newly acquired ranch are squatters, Jean Ramsey and her father and uncle, twin brothers. On the day the story opens the men find in a spring on the land a bracelet of ancient workmanship on which is a line of picture-writing, which when translated, proved to be the message that eventually leads them to the discovery of a complicated system of underground mine workings, evidently once the property of a now-extinct race of Indians. The bracelet also proves to be the key that opens the cliff and exposes the entrance to the mines.

Inside the caves, they discover evidence of the old civilization. The walls are shot through with wire gold and opals of a bluish luster stud them. Following the tunnels brings them to what is evidently an old ceremonial chamber. About the walls are ranged rows of mummies, presumably the remains of past rulers. In the center of the chamber stands a huge human skeleton with arms outstretched as though guarding the stone treasure at its feet.”

Charlie Chaplin in the short “One A.M.” (1916)
•••
💙PLOT: Drunk as a skunk, Charlie arrives home by taxi after a wild night out, only to realise that he has lost his key. Now, as an open window becomes the entrance, practically every single item or piece of furniture--including a possessed Murphy bed--becomes a formidable and insurmountable obstacle standing in his way, and working against him. Can't a man find peace at 1 o'clock in the morning?
⭐️IMDB: 7.1

"Cameras in the silent days were cranked by hand from choice, not because motors were unavailable. The old Biograph studios used motor-driven cameras for a time, and when Bell and Howell brought out their metal camera, in 1912, they made a motor for it. But it was not considered an essential part of the camera, and few used it ... Cranking, besides being reliable, had an added advantage; it allowed the cameraman to slow down or speed up the action during shooting. If an actor took a long time to mount a horse, the cameraman could slow down. The actor would then appear to leap nimbly into his saddle. As the horse galloped away, the cameraman would return to normal, adjusting the exposure so that the density of the shot would remain even."

The original action star, Buster Keaton, at it again in what might be his all-time biggest spectacle. 1927’s “The General” still boasts practical stunts that will leave you floored and cringing as Keaton goes on a high-speed chase to save the Woman and Steam Engine he loves. Hop onboard The General with Dax & Adam, and see why almost every action star to follow, from Jackie Chan to Harrison Ford, would go on to draw inspiration from the seemingly immortal director and star.

Actress is Silent Cinema Gloria Swanson. “Audiences make stars, either they like you or they don’t like you. And if you are liked equally by men and women, you have a longer life then if you are just going to be liked by men”.

Rivoli Theater - New York City 1918
"A novel feature of the Rivoli is "olfactory music", or a system of atomizers which spray perfume - oriental, clover, new-mown hay - and in accord with the orchestra, the screen and the stage settings, literally imbue one's senses with the athmosphere of the play."
Motion Picture Magazine, July 1918)

John Bunny (1863 - 1915)
"Perhaps the best known of all photoplayers is Mr. John Bunny, star of the Vitagraph. Mr. Bunny's name is a household word, not only from coast to coast in America, but also in every city and town in the world at all acquainted with the "movies" and the appearance of a "Bunny film" at any theater is really a treat."
Frances Agnew, Motion Picture Acting, 1913.
