Beatrice Dominguez, Rudy’s Tango partner in TFHOTA also starred with Art Acord ”The King of the Cowboys” in ”The White Horseman” a Universal serial in 1921. The working title was ”Opals of Evil.” Theater owners were encouraged to give away a real opal ring as a publicity stunt for the picture. The serial was based on the legend of a tribe of Indians in San Pedro who lived inside a mountain from which they left to tend their fields through a cunningly concealed door, they returned by night and closed the door behind them. ”Wayne Allen, a young Westerner, is willed a section of apparently worthless land. On the day the deeds are recorded he receives a mysterious message fastened to the handle of a sheath knife, warning him to stay away from the ranch. Allen feels that this indicates there is something at the ranch worthwhile and he sets out to investigate.
Living in the shack on his newly acquired ranch are squatters, Jean Ramsey and her father and uncle, twin brothers. On the day the story opens the men find in a spring on the land a bracelet of ancient workmanship on which is a line of picture-writing, which when translated, proved to be the message that eventually leads them to the discovery of a complicated system of underground mine workings, evidently once the property of a now-extinct race of Indians. The bracelet also proves to be the key that opens the cliff and exposes the entrance to the mines.
Inside the caves, they discover evidence of the old civilization. The walls are shot through with wire gold and opals of a bluish luster stud them. Following the tunnels brings them to what is evidently an old ceremonial chamber. About the walls are ranged rows of mummies, presumably the remains of past rulers. In the center of the chamber stands a huge human skeleton with arms outstretched as though guarding the stone treasure at its feet.”
