This 1952 British Half Penny has beautiful original lustrous surfaces. George the 6th is featured on the obverse despite the fact that he passed away on Feb 6 1952. As is the British tradition when a monarch dies, his likeness is continued on coinage until the end of the year. The reverse depicts the Golden Hind, a three-masted British Galleon captained by Sir Francis Drake that circumnavigated the globe between 1577 and 1580. On March 1st 1579, Golden Hind challenged and captured the Spanish galleon Nuestra Señora de la Concepción. This galleon had the largest treasure captured to that date: The six tons of treasure took six days to transship and included 26 tons of silver, half a ton of gold, jewelry, coins, and jewels. I love coins with ships.
