Albrunnastenen.
(Södra Möckleby 66:1)
-
The Albruna Stone is a strange and interesting monument standing in a field next to the road south of Albrunna by the rest stop. The 4 meter high, 1.1m wide and 0.2m thick limestone block precariously leans to the side but is held up by a small circular stone. In 2014 the stone fell over and broke into three pieces when a farmer accidentally drove the plow-truck into it. The pieces were taken away to the archives for safety so was absent for three years. In 2017 an exact copy was made by stone conservator Paterik Stocklassa and erected at the same location. On the back side is a square inscription informing that it is a replica. Sometime in the future the original stone is set to be displayed laying down in front of the copy with an informational sign.
-
At the end of 2016 before the replica was erected an archaeological investigation was done on the area around the stone by the Linnaeus University (Linnéuniversitetet). They discovered that the stone was part of a 20×25 meter large stone ship, a burial from the Vendel Period (550–793) or Viking Age (793–1042). Three other stones that made up the ship were located under the soil and are still buried. Metal detectors were sweeped over the area but nothing was found.

Ansarve skeppssättningar. (Tofta 14:1)
-
The Ansarve Stone Ship is the largest of its kind on Gotland, I really enjoyed this site and saw it in a BBC documentary years ago! It gets its name from Ansarve hage (field) where it is located. The ship is 47 meters long and 7 meters wide built with about 100 tightly packed standing stones. It dates to the Late Bronze Age (1100BCE-500BCE) and points directly towards a Stone Age dolmen (dös) that is today on the other side of the road. It is believed this is not a coincidence and that it is symbolically "anchored" to the dolmen. In the vicinity there are two other stone ships facing the same way as the large one as if they are sailing in a fleet formation. The dolmen called "Anservedösen" will be my next post! When archaeologists excavated here they found that the body had been cremated, the bones crushed and washed and placed in an urn. The urn had the shape of a house which has been found in many burials and are called "house-urns" (husurna). In these house-urns small household items were buried with the body, such as a shaving knife or other grooming equipment. It is believed that this was to be their house in the next life with all the necessities needed.
-
The second largest ship is about 50 meters south on the path and is 36x4 meters. It is built of short stones so not as impressive as the Ansarve Ship but is still massive. Next to it is a small circular stone-setting burial 3 meters in diameter. Also nearby is another damaged stone ship and burial cairn (gravröse) that I could not get to because the forest was too thick and the path was not cut further. I have been bitten by too many ticks (fästingar) recently! The burial cairn is part of a small grave field with 8 circular stone-settings.

Rannarveskeppen. (Klinte 86:1)
-
This grave field (gravfält) located out in the forest northeast of Klintehamn is dated to the Later Bronze Age ("Yngre bronsåldern", 1100-500BCE). It is one of the nicest ancient sites in Gotland. The 8 burials consist of 6 stone ships (skeppssättningar), 1 circular stone-setting (rund stensättning) and 1 standing stone (bautasten/rest sten). Four of the stone ships, equally sized, are connected by the prow in a row 32 meters long and 4 meters wide. This fleet of ships is known as the "Rannarve Ship" (Rannarveskeppen). The prows of the ships are marked with standing stones exceptionally larger than the rest of the ship. The ships are each built of 20-24 tightly packed standing stones. There are two other stone ships at the site that are smaller and one of them is damaged. The circular stone-setting is 4.5 meters in diameter and the standing stone is 0.9 meters high and leaning over a little. If you follow the trail 300 meters north you will come to large burial cairn (gravröse) with a 21 meter diameter and 3 meters high.
-
The Rannarve ships were excavated and restored between 1966-1967. In the most southernmost of the four ships in a row a granite burial-cist was found with two miniature bronze knives buried with the cremated remains of the deceased in a ”house urn” which is shaped like a Bronze Age house, found in many other burials. This is believed to symbolize their house in the afterlife with their items they treasured in life. In one of the other two ships miniature bronze tools such as a shaving blade and pincers were found with burnt human bones in an urn shaped like a beehive.

Gannarve skeppssättning. (Fröjel 9:1)
-
The stone ship just south of Klintehamn at Gannarve is one of the nicest in Gotland. It is 29 meters long and 5 meters wide and dates to the Later Bronze Age ("Yngre bronsåldern", 1100BCE-500BCE). The ship is built of 114 tightly packed standing stones ranging from 0.3-1.2 meters high decreasing in the middle to give the shape of a ship with prows. From the field where the ship is erected you can see out over the water and see the small islands Lilla Karlsö and Stora Karlsö. On the island of Stora Karlsö there are caves that people lived in during the Stone Age but I was unable this time to go there to see them!
-
There are about 350 boat-shaped graves on Gotland. In most cases, only one burial has been uncovered in each grave. When these people were buried, it was a custom to cremate the dead on a pyre. After cremation, the bones were crushed and washed before they were placed in an urn. There were once two boat-shaped graves here at Gannarve. One of them fell victim to the plough long ago. The existing grave was almost destroyed in the same way. Only the stem stones remained when archaeologists started excavating the monument in 1959. The excavation uncovered soil marks of all the removed stones beneath the peat. Consequently, the reconstruction of the entire grave was not too difficult. There were plenty of large stones lying right next to the grave, and it is quite possible that several of the stones used once actually belonged to the original grave.

Tjelvars grav. (Boge 28:1)
-
This last week I was on a trip to Gotland and Öland so there will be many posts coming up about the ancient monuments I visited! According to the Gutasaga, Tjelvar was the man who first lit a fire on the island of Gotland which used to sink into the ocean during the day and rose up at night. After he lit the fire the island stayed above water. Tjelvar's son Havde (Hafþi) and his wife Vitastjerna (Huítastierna) became the ancestors of the Gutes. According to folk tradition he is buried in this grave shaped like a ship. It is thought that Tjelvar is identical to Tjalve who is associated with fire and servant of the thunder god Thor. When Carl von Linné visited the island in 1741 he wrote, "Tjällvars Islet and Tjällvars Bay lay rather close to our path ... The Islet named Tjällvar if historians speak true is said to have been named after a certain Thielward who before the time of Christ landed on Gotland."
-
Today archaeologists know that the ship burial dates from the Late Bronze Age ("Yngre bronsåldern", 1100BCE-550BCE). It would be hard for this to actually be Tjelvar's tomb unless he reached a biblical age since there were people in Gotland from the Stone Age. The ship is 11x5 meters and built with 54 tightly packed standing stones that range from 1.05-1.2 meters in height. They are aranged so the height decreases in the center like a ship and the prows stick up. The inside is filled with small stones. In 1938 when the grave underwent restoration a small grave-cist (hällkista) was found on the eastern end with burnt bones and pottery shards inside. Nearby the grave are two hill-forts and a large Bronze Age burial cairn called Majsterrojr. There is also a small grave field in the surrounding.

Blomsholm in October. This stoneship is about 1500 years old. In this time the shore was close to this place. Now the shore is about 10km west of Blomsholm. I like the autumn colours in this picture.

Yesterday’s visit to Ale’s stenar / Ale’s stones at Kåseberga, southern Sweden. It is a very special place high up on a plateau at the Baltic sea.
. ”....Ale’s stones is a famous megalithic monument aged back to the nordic iron age. It is Sweden’s largest stone ship with larger stones at each end. It is 67 m long and formed by 59 large boulders weighing up to 1,8 tons each....” (This text is excerpts from Wikipedia and there is a lot of interesting facts to read about this stoneship)

Gravfält vid Tomta (Björksta 153:1) & skeppssättning vid Nicktuna.
-
Just next to the road at Tomta on the way up to Tortuna there is a small hill with a nice Iron Age grave field. It has 5 circular stone-settings (runda stensättningar), 1 stone-string (stensträng) and 3 standing stones (bautastenar/resta stenar). One of the stone-settings is on the crown of the hill and looks almost like a small burial cairn (gravröse) and is likely the main burial here. The other circles are not very visible but one of them has half remaining because the rest has fallen down the hill when it eroded. The standing stones vary in size, the largest is 1.75 meters high, the middle-sized one is about 1 meter high and the smallest is 0.75 meters. The large and middle sized one are facing each other with what looks like a pit between them, maybe where the burials were. The small stone is a few meters west of them surrounded by many trees. The grave field dates to the Later Iron Age (375-1042) during which the Viking Age (793-1042) is the latest section. The stone-string is in the northwestern part of the grave field and continues for 58 meters. The area was so heavily forested so I was unable to get to the string for photos.
-
On the other side of the road a hundred meters down the road in the village of Nicktuna is a huge stone ship at the golf course. It is even bigger than the ones at Anundshög and is about 100 meters long. It is made of stones spaced about 5 meters apart that are 2 meters high, some have fallen over. The river Lillån has a bridge where the road crosses to Tortuna so this was a prime place for burials and monuments. The river goes west by Björksta Church then south emptying into Lake Mälaren.
