You might not always love it while you’re doing it, but you must love it as a whole. Short road races are about time, and being competitive. Mountain runs, ultras, and trail running are about that internal struggle, entering that pain cave and seeing how far you can push, and how much pain and burning you can endure while continuously pushing forward. I might be addicted to the suffer fest. I wouldn’t consider myself a real ultra runner yet, with 2 marathons, and a 50k under my belt. I’m working towards that 50miler, and I know I can’t stop there. I’ll always need to see what else this asthmatic gangly body is capable of.
