The Vietnamese believe that eating the still beating heart of a snake freshly cut from its body is a representation of masculinity and dominance, and that it has medicinal values including the improvement of male performance.
As a Doctor, I don’t subscribe to the latter thinking, plus there was no way to validate it since my Wife was 2840km away. And I wonder if the former was more frat boy bravado than proof of alphamale-ness. Nonetheless, I was never going to pass up the opportunity given that I was in Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam and home to the (in?)famous Snake Village.
In the end, I tasted nothing more than a blood tinged vodka, my teammates now suspect I may be a serial killer in disguise, and my libido was well within control. Given the overtly homoerotic setting of travelling with my Football team, that was not too difficult. Still, I am thankful for the experience, and while I may not do it again, I would certainly have done it the first time in a heartbeat.
