Plains hognose also more commonly referred to as western hognose range throughout parts of the central US into areas of Canada right above North Dakota and Montana. There are isolated populations in Missouri, Illinois, Iowa, and Minnesota. They are more wide spread throughout Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Eastern Wyoming, Kansas, Nebraska, Colorado, down through Oklahoma, Texas, and New Mexico. They are a harmless species that utilize abandoned rodent burrows on short grass and tall grass prairies. Prairie habitats near sloughs and rivers are especially good for hognose populations. If you come across one they will often flatten themselves out and hiss which can appear intimidating, but they won't bite out of defense. If you see or know anyone that comes across a hognose; inform them they are a harmless species that are important to the ecosystem and shouldn't be killed. People who kill hognose mistake them for a potentially dangerous species when it's quite the opposite.
