Thinking of Namibia... On one of my last days in Namibia, I was introduced to NaDEET (The Namib Desert Environmental Education Trust), and had the opportunity to tour their Environmental Education Center with the group I was with
They offer three to five day hands-on, experiential, environmental education programmes for Namibians. Most of the programmes are attended by primary school children. However, they also offer courses to secondary schools, out-of-school youth, educators and community members. .
You can learn more about their Center programs here: http://nadeet.org/school-programmes
In my mind they put the US to shame with their passion and quest to educate their youth on enviro awareness, as well as create valuable solutions for real sustainable change. .
I am very passionate about this non-profit organization and will be looking for ways to support their efforts as well as share this camp idea with friends of mine in Uganda and in other parts of Africa and Mexico. Of course, I will also be passing the word along to friends here that work in environmental sustainability. I think this would be an awesome idea for a summer camp in the states. I googled Environmental sustainability summer camps and nothing came up. Did I miss something? .
Here are some pics of what they are doing at NaDEET and some info on the organization. If you have questions or want more info, please DM me or comment .
To provide environmental education for Namibians, regardless of income, by:
* addressing relevant environmental issues through hands-on, experiential learning.
* supporting the Namibian school curricula in a practical, learner-centred way.
* providing the opportunity of experiencing the county's namesake - the Namib Desert - first hand, thus creating a sense of respect and responsibility for their natural environment. .
Their philosophy is “We practice what we teach!”
