Are you a Dove soap user? This post by @babeandbeauty is a must-read!
Today’s vintage & cult-favorite beauty product I am discussing is the Dove Sensitive Skin Beauty Bar. This bar launched in 1955 & has quite the following as a “gentle face bar.” Dove’s big claim to fame is that their bars "aren’t soap at all & they contain 1/4 moisturizing cream."
A good starting point is defining what soap is in the first place. According to the FDA, true soap is made via a process called saponification. This is combining oils (fats) with sodium hydroxide (lye) which is caustically alkaline in pH. Many commercial bars are made with lye even though the word sodium hydroxide, saponified oils or lye don’t appear on their ingredient list. Often the finished product won’t contain lye & will be transformed into another INCI name. In fact, here is the list of ingredients in Dove’s Beauty bar that are *technically* processed with sodium hydroxide (lye).
🧼 Sodium Palmate: Palm oil + lye
🧼 Sodium Tallowate: Beef fat + lye
🧼 Sodium Palm Kernelate: Palm oil + lye
🧼 Sodium Cocoate: Coconut oil + lye
That being said, IT STILL CONTAINS SOAP INGREDIENTS. It's misleading, it's still very drying & too alkaline in pH, even with the “1/4 moisturizing cream." This gives people the false sense that they are purchasing something better for their skin.
Balanced skin is around a 5.5 pH while the pH of a Dove bar is around a 7 almost 8 as you can see from my very simplistic pH test strip. Soap, beauty bar, cleansing bar…whatever the crap you want to call it, I would not consider this bar skin-friendly. Detergents and soaps are still not good for the skin. Skin that is too alkaline in pH will look dehydrated, dull, may have dry patches, fine lines & wrinkles can look accentuated, it can trigger eczema and psoriasis.
I also can’t tell you the number of times I have had clients say “well it works for me”, “I can only use Dove” or “Dove keeps my skin is clear.” IS IT really working for you? 🤔 While many people consider healthy skin by being acne-free, it's also about the hydration levels, elasticity & inflammation not present in the skin.
