The Garden House, oldest house on #BeaconHill (built in 1883)-with oldest pear orchard in WA state (some of trees are 100+ yrs old) – will be considered by Seattle Landmarks Preservation Board for landmark nomination TOMORROW Feb 20 at 3:30pm @ City Hall, Room L2-80. You can go to the meeting & comment (and wear green) or email firstname.lastname@example.org beforehand (more details & tips on commenting at www.savegardenhouse.org). On Oct 10, 2018, the Washington State Federation of Garden Clubs (WSFGC) sold #theGardenHouse for over $1.4M cash to a private buyer, who plans to open a bakery at the site. Garden House was protected by a deed clause requiring it to be maintained as a historic site & that it could only be used, sold, or leased for non-profit purposes, but WSFGC went to court & removed it in anticipation of selling the property. So currently there’s no restriction on how the new owners may develop or sell the property in the future. The WSFGC had received & rejected a higher offer from @historicseattle , which was hoping to partner with community groups like @BeaconArts & @Beaconhillgardenclub to preserve & maintain the site as a community, arts, & non-profit center. The Garden House had been a gathering space for the Beacon Hill neighborhood for over a century -- the site of Garden House Concerts, Beacon Arts’ office for 8 years, meeting place of #DanteAlighieriSociety of WA since 1930, & countless events, weddings, funerals, birthdays, church services & other community meetings.
Beacon Arts filed a landmark nomination application in October. Since then the owner filed an application to build 5 #townhouses on the pear orchard, proposing to remove six 100+ year old pear trees. At this time, there’s no plans for neighborhood review or input, but if at least 50 people write to the city/council member requesting a public meeting, it triggers a public hearing on the #redevelopment. @savegardenhouse #savegardenhouse #preservation #seattlehistory #historicseattle #seattlelandmark #seattlecommunity #seattleculture #seattlesoul #Seattlemusic #seattleart #seattlecharacter #seattlerealestate #development #displacement #southend #vanishingseattle #vivaseattle
