I had a conversation this weekend, with a young lady, whom near the end of our discourse mentioned that she did not like talking to new people. It made her nervous and sometimes afraid. When I asked why that was, she said it was because it was something she never learned to do as a child. I asked again why that was and she responded, with a bit of a laugh, that her mom taught her to not talk to strangers. Now that is great, it meant her mom cared enough about her to try and protect her from what she perceived to be a potential threat to the well-being of her child. It did not however, prepare that child for a life where opportunities usually present themselves in the new people you meet everyday.
Think back to a time when you were a child. To a time when you thought to yourself, 'when I get older things will be different and I can do what I want.' That child was right! While as adults, many of us allow our inner fears and doubts, that were developed in childhood, to determine what it is that we can or cannot do, we also have the power to change all that. You have the power to fill the voids left from childhood. You have the ability to create, or maybe join, an environment where you can learn to talk to people, you can learn a new skill set, you can overcome those pitfalls from your childhood, so that you can live the best life you can envision.
