LIKE A BRANCH ‘As a branch cannot bear fruit all by itself, but must remain part of the vine, neither can you unless you remain in me.’ – John 5:4 “Through Him, with Him, in Him!”
These words taken from the Doxology at Mass, have fascinated me for the longest time but its reality is even more fascinating. We as humans beings are created by God for his good pleasure which is eternal happiness. As baptised Christians, we live, move and have our being in God. With God we are like fish in water, like a branch attached to a tree; we are in communion with Him (sharing life with Him). We are alive because of God. Life without God means death both here and in the afterlife. We do more than just draw nourishment from God. We bear fruit in plenty; fruits of good works and holiness of life. We are pruned so that we can be more productive. We may go through trials and test as ways of plucking out leaves of pride, self-sufficiency and undue material attachments. We are also pruned of any sinful tendencies, so that we are not led astray. Remaining in Christ ensures that we remain conscious of God, we desire holy things and we desire peace with others. Nourish the communion you share with God by receiving the Eucharist, true spiritual food. Go for sacramental confession regularly. Listen to God by reading the scriptures. I personally love to read it at night so that it is the last thing on my mind when I sleep and the first thing on my mind when I awake.
Lord keep me close to you like fish in water and like a branch to a vine.
Q. What are some things you wish are not sinful?
Acts 15:1-6; Psalm 122:1-5; John 15:1-8
