✔️Do you ever use single leg exercise as your primary strength movement?
✔️Do you incorporate single leg work into your warm up, movement prep or accessory work?

An elevated, restricted 1st rib can limit shoulder flexion and your ability to perform overhead exercises. I really like this banded 1st rib mobilization with shoulder flexion to clean up shoulder ROM and restrictions in this area. A medium power band anchored under the foot applies plenty of inferior pressure.

Friday motivation: D2 soccer player getting his work in this morning! The emphasis in this exercise is executing the landing and stabilization at the end of the movement. This increases gluteus medius strength, as well as stabilization and proprioception. Sometimes we forget to strengthen the landing or the ending - but this timing is often more important for injury prevention. Several injuries occur when athletes are unable to properly nail these components.

The Rectus Abdominis

This muscle is very often mistaken as being the ‘core’. We see patients doing a thousand sit-ups, crunches and Russian twists in order to get the all desirable 6 pack, but really, the rectus only makes up part of the anterior wall of the core brace.

In regards to movement and function, the rectus is not a prime mover. As part of the core brace, it’s job is to facilitate load transfer between the upper and lower body ⬆️⬇️

Think of it as a spring that can store, transfer and release energy to assist in all functional movements.

Is it a mobility issue or a stability issue??
.
If you missed the #docjenchallenge yesterday, grab a water bottle and try it out!
.
In order to get down to the ground, you must make sure your head and chest stay relatively tall in place without too much movement or the water bottle falls.
.
Could this be an ankle and hip mobility issue?
For sure.
If you need help opening those areas, I would highly recommend diving into The Mobility Method to find WHERE those restrictions are and learn the tools to release them 🙌
.
Now, as for a stability issue...
I am STILL seeing those “Instagram booties” taking charge into the squat.
What does this mean?
You dump the hip bones forward (anterior pelvic tilt), stick the booty out, and then try to squat 🙈
.
Not only will you lose your ability to increase squat depth, but you could end up impinging into those hips over time and wind up with some achy back or knee pain.
No bueno.
.
Instead, I suggest rocking the hips back and forth between extreme anterior pelvic tilt and posterior pelvic tilt.
This will allow your body to find “neutral.”
Then, think of pulling that blueberry in ladies (men, pretend you’re walking into cold water and sucking them jewels back into you), draw the ribcage down and breathe as you lower to the ground.
.
Will you still “butt wink”?!
Most likely.
Also normal if you’re going to sit on the ground.
But if it drops from a huge anterior pelvic tilt to a butt wink, chances are you’re losing that water bottle overhead.
.
Lastly, the mobility to keep the chest upright should come from that upper back extension.

💥Sciatica is a common description for radiating pain down into the leg. It's described for its involvement with the Sciatic Nerve, which stems from the lumbar nerve roots and travels posterior to the buttocks and thigh and moves into the leg and foot. However, there are many conditions that may cause sciatica ranging from herniated discs, lumbar stenosis, degenerative disc disease to something called piriformis syndrome.
.
.
💥In the case of Piriformis Syndrome, a sciatica cause that is more muscular in nature, there are things you can do to help manage it. The piriformis muscle stems from the sacrum and connects into the thigh bone; it serves primarily as a hip lateral rotator, but also abductor at certain angles. Since the piriformis is so close to the sciatic nerve, over lengthening of the muscle (due to tight hip internal rotators) or over-activation (compensating for weak glutes) may contribute to that radiating pain and numbness into the posterior thigh.
.
.
💥In terms of management, first, we must inactivate the piriformis to let it relax. This can be done with a foam roller or tennis ball. You will roll around until you feel that tender spot and just hold the area for about 30-45 seconds, 2-3 times. This creates a pressure point to help the piriformis inactivate.
.
.
💥Next, you need to lengthen the tightened opposite complex, in this case, the adductors, so that the piriformis isn't pulled back into a lengthened position. To do this, use a foam roller to find the tender areas of the adductors and hold for 30-45 seconds, 2-3 times.
.
.
💥Lastly, you'll want to activate the glutes so that the piriformis can relax during hip abduction. Perform the bridge exercise with the legs closer to the buttocks so that the hamstrings are not activated. Perform 2 sets of 10 reps. Always ensure that your sciatica symptoms improve with management, not get worse.
.

Are Kettlebell swings important?🤷‍♀️

Of course they are! They require you to maintain a neutral/rigid spine and hip hinge at a relatively light resistance. This mimics your activities of daily living (e.g. getting up from a chair, sitting into your car, grabbing groceries from your trunk) than setting up for a 400lb deadlift. The down-side to kettlebell swings is that they lack “load capacity” which ultimately limits “progressive overload”, which ultimately limits “adaptation”. Not familiar with those terms? We’ve talked about garlic ear oil before for👂infections but sometimes you just need to emphasize things when it’s real life! Earlier this week our 5️⃣ year old 🙀was complaining about his ear hurting. If you haven’t had an ear infection in a while they come on fast!! Disc degeneration is found in 96% of asymptomatic 80-year-olds and 37% of asymptomatic 20-year-olds.
What does it mean if you have disc degeneration? It may mean nothing for you. A large portion of the healthy population do NOT experience any pain, numbness, tingling, weakness or any other symptoms even though they do have degeneration.
Degeneration is a natural part of ageing. It may mean you need to be more stringent on your self-care (such as rehabilitation exercises and other advice given by your health practitioner). It may not mean anything.
A lot of people have degeneration and have no idea that they do! They are 100% pain free.
