Ankle mobility! Do you have it?! This mobile joint is between two stable joint complexes, the foot and the knee. We generally want a lot of movement and adaptability from the ankle.
The foot is our solid foundation and connection to the earth. If our body is a house we would be wise to build on a solid, stable foundation.
The knee is more of a hinge joint. We typically want to make it strong in its primary plane of motion, avoid collapsing, and excessive movement in other planes of motion. This puts undue stress on the ligaments meant to keep the knee stable.
With a mobile ankle we are able to better help the joints above and below fulfill their duty of stability which can often be lacking. Feet have a tendency to be sloppy, ankles stiff, and knees unstable/buckling. We can work to change that.
