As some of you may know, I have epilepsy! I had my first seizure when I was 14.
.
With a seizure, I lose consciousness and convulse for 1-2 minutes. I can bite my tongue. Afterwards I’m dazed, unresponsive and my speech is slurred as my brain slowly reboots itself. I feel really tired and just want to sleep it off. My whole body aches.
.
When my seizures first started, I would be fine one second and convulsing on the ground the next. Now I get a short warning beforehand which gives me enough time to react so I don’t injure myself.
.
My seizures started with one every 2-3 months, then 1-2 a year. I had a 7 year break at one stage. I have been seizure free now for just over a year and a half and counting.

Apart from not being able to drive (which I’m hoping to change soon), my quality of life hasn’t really been affected. I just need to make sure I take my medication, get enough sleep, avoid too much stress and watch my alcohol intake and the rest looks after itself.

Sometimes I don't feel like I have epilepsy because it really only interrupts my everyday life when I have a seizure, at which point it’s like I’m that 14 year old all over again. I may never fully outgrow epilepsy, but I can deal with whatever it throws at me. It’s something I have to live with but it doesn't define who I am as a person! It doesn’t control my life… I do!

I began powerlifting about 4 years ago, but I was worried that the pressure on my body would trigger seizures. My neurologist didn’t see a problem with me continuing and I now compete at an International level and I love it. I am also going to Everest Base Camp in April, where I'll be attempting a Guinness World Record.

For anyone living with epilepsy or, indeed any illness, I would say-Life is short. Enjoy it. Adapt to your situation. Set goals. Follow your dreams. Don’t let your illness control you and most importantly, surround yourself with a good support network! If you can’t do what you love anymore, figure out another way to incorporate it into your life or explore new hobbies. Whatever you do, remember your illness does not define you. Your strength and courage do!

Nothing impressive but really happy with the fact I can do low bar squat again! couldn't do squat for over a month because of an infection! Now its gone and I can rebuild this squat! Today I did some beltless low box squat:
45lbs x 2 sets of 10
135lbs x 8
185lbs x 8
225lbs x 8
275lbs x 8
315lbs x 8
Also did some SSB front squat
For sum more 8

Last week I did 180 for 10x3, which felt good, but this week I did 195 for 10x3 & switched it up by not being able to see myself in the mirror. Next time I will be making minor adjustments with completely stopping at the bottom instead of it being a tap and go! Squats are progressively getting stronger and easier without a mirror! ➡️ Leg Press: for hamstrings and glutes-engagement, place your feet higher on the platform, I like to have my feet shoulder width apart (some people prefer to have a narrower stance). You can activate your quads more by pushing with the balls of the feet by placing your feet in the middle of the platform, hip width apart.

If you're at all curious about my pre-squat ritual for high intensity sets, here are a few of the mental phrases I shout at myself in my head before I jump in:

SHOW ME WHAT YOU'VE GOT
FIGHT! FIGHT!!
IS THAT IT, YOU BASTARD?
GRIT THOSE TEETH
PURGE ALL WEAKNESS
NO TURNING BACK

I'm not even kidding. I've actually internalized these phrases and their meanings. They're definitely a conglomerate of the mantras of strength inherent in all of the video game/anime/pop culture influences I've grown up with. I just love to go a little over the top with my intensity.

1: 380x8 after 3x5. I had half the coffee I usually do, so that's why I needed the extra intensity today. I'm sure with my usual caffeine dosage I could've hit the 10 that I was aiming for.

2: First set of 3x5, pitifully slow and the reason why I needed to dig deep for later sets.

3: 315 warmup double

Still a big improvement on the miserable 365x4+4 of my last run of the program and this is also encroaching on the 385x8 max intensity set of the 5-rep wave I did on that same run. The near future looks promising!

never in a million years did i think i’d be “that gym girl” but truthfully the gym has almost become my “safe space” considering how crazy my life has been the past year, it started to be the place where i can let go of all negative energy and replace it with positivity and happy thoughts. i have truly fell in love with taking care of my body at this point, and it has become a total change of lifestyle that i used to live. consistency and a balanced diet are 🔑! (not gonna lie i had half of a box of thin mints last night BUT HEY! it’s about balance people🤪)

So I finally learned how to front squat.

This may sound weird but I never really learned how to front squat. I’ve always wanted to be able to utilize the front squat due to the work it directly gives the quads but its always been very uncomfortable for me which made me avoid it. Between the bar and torso positioning, I just couldn’t get things to click.

Today was a good day. My coach @c_didomenico happens to be a great front squatter and the cues he gave me set in immediately. Allowing me to hit this 315 fairly easily. This was my first time EVER going heavier than 135, so I’ll take it!

This video is a few months old, but it’s a good baseline of my strength. Squatting is not only good for developing legs, but also for developing your core. When squatting, you should take as much air as possible and push out against your abdominal wall. This in turn, works your abs. I always know I’m squatting properly if my core is sore after! .

Some Rolling Stones "Get Off My Cloud". My mind had to seriously think about the movements that Shieda shared yesterday. So half and half with some oblique squats as well. Had an ankle quirk in the middle of one of my lifts and had to do some ankle circles so I could put my foot down and it hold me🤦‍♀️ ankle issues 🙊🤣.

I really do hope everyone out there is staying motivated and grinding towards their dreams !! You can’t get to your dreams without goals , and upping my squat is always going to be one of my goals!❤️
It’s taken quite a long time to be able to do 10 repetitions on 70kg!! But I’ve been working hard on it recently. I usually do 50-60kg so 70 is quite a big progress for me !
