The Pout-Pout fish and the Bully-bully Shark by Deborah Diesen
I came across this wonderful book in the One Up Children’s Library where I take my kids. I am forever on the lookout for books that would interest my 3 year old, who lately has become quite the fusspot about which books he wants to read. A Facilitator insisted I issue this book and boy, am I glad I listened to her. The book addresses the topic of bullying in a way that’s easy for my 3 year old to comprehend. As parents we are always concerned about our kids being bullied, but we should always be conscious of the fact that our child should not turn out to be a bully.
This book, I felt, in a balanced way gave a perspective from both sides to the readers, on why you should raise your voice against bullying and why you should not be a bully, at the same time in a very subtle way(see the second picture) telling the young readers to not be quick to label a person as a bully, Bravo! I always stop after I read a couple pages and explain in detail what the author is trying to say, sometimes my son listens in rapt attention but mostly rolls his eyes. This book was a big hit with my threenager because the eye rolling was kept to minimum.
