For the redesign of a 22-year-old store at 125 Summer Street in Boston’s Financial District, designers knew they would need to be especially thoughtful. The store is located in a historic building that boasts beautiful architectural details, all of which could be showcased to a better advantage. “We looked at what gave us the most bang for our buck and took a preservationist approach,” A designer said. “These are finishes that will age well in this historic building for years to come.” Yet another aspect factored into the project’s complexity was an artist collaboration. In recent years, artist Kelsey Montague has lit up Instagram with her #whatliftsyou campaign. Her murals of decorative “uplifting” wings are painted around the world and have become selfie magnets that go viral on social media.
The design restraint allows the artwork to shine. For the store entryway, the team chose a colorful depiction of the Siren from the catalog and enlarged it to mural proportions. To the left, Kelsey’s inspirational imagery of two wings dominates the far wall. Her now viral artwork, tagged with the #whatliftsyou campaign slogan, is part of a Starbucks merchandise collaboration, all of which was revealed at a store opening celebration teeming with Kelsey’s fan base and Starbucks friends and family. #tobeapartner #storedesign
