Mao Mao had been a courtyard cat for about 10 years and was being fed by local residents, but continued to remain an outdoor cat. Over a span of several months, the residents did not see Mao Mao and when he appeared again in March for one day they noticed he looked much thinner. Mao Mao then reappeared again in May and looked as if he was starving but did not eat the wet food that was left out for him. Alarmed with this change, a kind rescuer brought Mao Mao into ICVS.
Once at ICVS, Mao Mao had a full examination, stool test and blood work and x-rays. Mao Mao was at least 12-years old and diagnosed with severe feline stomatitis, an advanced dental infection that caused ulcers in his mouth, bleeding and infected gums, and extreme pain causing him to no longer be able to eat. Mao Mao also had many internal parasites that need to be treated. Mao Mao weighed in at only 1.8 KG when he arrived at ICVS. On the street, he was slowly starving to death as his dental disease caused him so much pain he could no longer eat. And whatever small amount of food he was able to eat was being consumed by the parasites.
Mao Mao required extensive treatment beginning with antibiotics to control the infection, parasite treatment to rid him of worms and fleas and daily handfeeding help him regain strength. Mao Mao needed a full mouth dental extraction surgery to remove all of the broken, infected and rotting teeth and to alleviate the constant pain and inflammation in his gums, but was too thin and weak to undergo surgery. So, he was treated for a month to bring the infection under control and to allow him to regain his stength before surgery.
Once he was strong enough, Mao Mao underwent a full mouth dental extraction surgery. After the successful surgery, Mao Mao spent an additional 3 weeks at the ICVS recovering and eating! Cats with no teeth can eat canned and pouch foods and even dry food! The dry kibble just needs to be small enough for them to swallow. Mao Mao made an amazing recovery and was able to eat and groom himself again. He was a different cat in personality and was so affectionate and loving after finding relief from the constant pain!
