I used to suck my teeth at people who'd have much to say about use of padding (tools) like ones used for squats...more so as I already had scar tissue built up due to squatting the bare bar at gyms only equipped with neural grips etched into the part that came in contact with your skin.
Long story short I'd been there done that and wasnt long before I couldn't hear the noise they'd make as progress speaks for itself.
The more experience you get you'll notice the people who take the time to observe everyone's shortfalls but their own. May seem like one extreme to the next but hear me out.
People who focus on everyone else who is doing tend to be the same people who making the least progress.
If you're not asking yourself whether that is you or not...if you're incapable of reflection, than you could just as easily be swayed by the thoughts of your observers. Trust that everyone has them. And like lions stalking prey, your followers aren't always your friends🤷🏾‍♂️

Had a pretty shitty power session last night. This nearly took the skin off my hands without my straps 😂🤦🏽‍♂️ plus some grunting. First time I’ve been heavy since pulling my back muscle in April. Lucky came away not too sore. ————-

Here is my client Liz performing probably the hardest side plank variation there is- the bottoms up kettlebell Copenhagen plank.

It is super challenging, not just for the core muscles but also the adductors and shoulders

Side planks are one of my favourite exercises as they are extremely effective for strengthening the obliques and the quadratus lumborum- a muscle in the lower back that is often weak and the cause of pain for many people.

W9D2 - slingshot bench and rows and stuff. Shoulder is just getting worse so I think this was my last pressing day for awhile. Going to just do some upper back stuff and very light bench to dial in technique. See if I can heal and maybe add some overall strength. Probably better for my bench than trying to power through pain.

Rows are way too often forgotten but so dang important. Stuck with my Axle Rose (never gets old) to build up double overhand strength and with them antagonistic muscles.

Probably going to kill this program after this week and go to 5 week cycles with alternating variations until next competition.

What a day! I woke up at 2am and could not fall back to sleep! Then, I snapped myself in the eye with a resistance band at work🤦🏼‍♀️ which brought an unplanned visit to the eye dr (all is well, thank goodness). The rest of the day has been super busy! But a workout was much needed so that is what I did this afternoon. Cardio and strength including this resistance band exercise👍🏻 And now I am ready to crawl in bed!

This made me laugh. I am so freakin sore from legs yesterday. Earlier today I felt my quads and hamstrings firing up. They are good now but OMG! My calves are not in good shape at all. 😂They’ve progressively gotten worse as the night as gone on to the point I can’t walk right.🤪 It’ll be interesting to see how they feel come tomorrow morning. Guess that little set of 100 calf raises at the end that I decided to go into beast mode and add some weight to, got me good! 😂

Monday evening bench press. Age: 62 BW: 163 lbs.

Week 5/3/1 of the @jimwendler 5/3/1 program.

45 lbs x 5
75 x 5
95 x 5

170.0 x 2
137.5 x 5

I was supposed to do 1 rep at 175 for my last lift. However, that would have been close to an RPE of 10. So I decided that a lighter weight would be a better strategy.

Two reps at 170 came pretty easily. I’m really satisfied with my bench press progress. The gains have been coming slowing but steadily.

170 x 2 is a new personal best for me at this body weight.

Perhaps the 2x a month intensity sessions are working.

This week was an anniversary of sorts. I’ve completed 4 years of strength training. Amazing!

I started lifting at 58 years old after suffering 28 years with CFS. It took all my effort to bench 10lb dumbells when I started. Now I’ve become a master athlete. LOL.

I don’t know where this lifting journey will ultimately take me. Hopefully, by God’s grace, I’ll continue to get stronger and healthier.
