How do I get "lean" and look "toned"?

This is a question I am asked reguarly.
Answer is: Calorie deficit and strength training.
.
We all have muscle to a degree, problem is we cant see it because it is covered in a layer of body fat #truth. To get the lean look we need to lean out by going into a calorie deficit & to get the "toned" look, you need to be doing strength training.
.
Please dont expect to do excess cardio and end up toned AF. Its not going to happen, unless you already have a decent amount of muscle but then you run the issue of muscle depletion. Be smart.
.
You need to be on a structured program which will put you in a small calorie deficit and ensure a high protein intake to try preserve your muscle. From there, you increase your calories for muscle growth.

It really is as simple as that, dont think you need to go to drastic measures and follow stupid FAD diets or drink the latest "fat burning tea" or excessive low calories to get results 🤦🏽‍♀️🤦🏽‍♀️🤦🏽‍♀️

Why take a big breath before performing a squat? If you are lifting heavy weight you need to brace your core that is protecting your spine and lower back. By taking this big breath before the descent phase of the lift it will ensure to help you with bracing the core. If you are performing bodyweight squats or lighter weights just breathe normally don’t over complicate things.

1️⃣ inhale through your nose into your belly till you can’t anymore and then, then inhale through your mouth. You are now ready to lift.
2️⃣Next is bracing your core. With my Male clients I tell them to think of nuts to guts and for my female clients pelvic floor to belly button doing this will give them an idea of how to brace their transverse abdominal and not their rectus abdominals. Keep bracing and don’t exhale till step 3️⃣
3️⃣Start the ascent of the lift, keep holding your breath till you get through the hardest part of your lift. Once got through it start to exhale slightly. The whole time bracing your core.
4️⃣Reset the lift and repeat. This type of heavy lifting should only be repeated 3-5 reps if it is anymore than this, you generally wouldn’t need to use this breathing technique because it isn’t heavy enough. If you enjoy using this technique do it for all lifts.

Look at the goals you put down. How long is your long term target?

If your aim is to build size you’re going to need to think carefully about what to train and when. Base your sessions over 4 days taking a day of rest between each. More on training systems soon..!

Wanting to burn fat for your holidays? This is a bit easier as you can complete short sharp sessions but you’ll still need time for recovery! Try training first thing in the morning pre breakfast (fasted training) 3/4 days a week. Not a morning person? 4/5 short (20 minutes max!) HIIT sessions are a good start. Just get that heart rate over 140!

Bottom line: too much and you’ll ‘burn out’. Your performance drops, your body holds onto fat stores as a survival mechanism and eventually you get bored due to lack of results...

Too little, you’ll eventually get there but your timeline will be extended or you’ll just end up maintaining general fitness levels with no significant improvements...

When we look to release the tension on our neck, we look 👀 to blame and stretch the villainous Upper Trapezius and the Levator Scapulae! However, tightness indicates that these muscles are in a holding pattern that must be yanked open!

Try this Self-Assessment and Active Scapular Mobility Drill! Activate and exercise your Upper Trapezius and Levator Scapulae! They like to be worked out 💪!

If you do this drill and your shoulders burn quickly, your Traps and Levator aren’t Tight...they are underutilized and stiff!! Get those Scapular muscle moving! #MoveYourScapula

What does that mean?-
1st rep - 1 second negative
2nd - 2 seconds
3rd - 3 seconds
And so on all the way to a 10 second negative.
4 sets of 10

Tracking your lifts is something I highly recommend, in time it gives you a progress report📈, it stops you wasting your time⏰ wondering what you can lift, and it allows you to calculate➕ progressive overload
.
HOWEVER
.
Tracking numbers and adding weight to the bar isn't the be all and end all of the gym - especially when it comes to muscle building
.
Improving form🏋️‍♀️, using different tempos⌚ (slow down for muscle building, speed up for athleticism/power), focusing on the muscle you are contracting😐 and greater lifts in relation to your bodyweight 📉 are ALL progress too
.
Just because you can't write it down doesn't mean it's not progress!
