Adam with an absolute dinosaur of a perch from Tuesday evening. Every time we net the lake in the winter we have numbers of big stripeys turn up and have weighed them to 3lb 12oz, but that one wasn’t even the biggest there! Perch don’t handle stress well, and after being dragged across the lake in a net with big boisterous carp, it’s noticeable that they don’t like it when the time comes to empty the net. As such, we always make sure to get them back into the lake as quickly as possible - usually just picking a couple off the top of the pile to quickly weigh. We have 100% had to return 4lb+ fish unweighed, which is gutting to do at the time but the health of the fish comes first. Perch are an important part of our fishery, and as well as looking absolutely mega, they do a great job of controlling the fry every year and stopping our biomass from getting out of control. Believe it or not, despite having such a large number of big perch they are very rarely fished for!
