“LET ‘EM ROLL” Big John Patton (organ) Bobby Hutcherson (vibes) Grant Green (guitar) Otis Finch (drums); 1965, Blue Note, NY, Stereo
My Musings: This is an underappreciated classic. Anything that has Big John Patton and Blue Note in the same sentence should be bought immediately. This is my favorite of BJP’s BN albums and it’s brilliant. This date is blues-soul-jazz at its finest. It literally doesn’t get better than this. Green and Patton have an awesomely-weird kismet and play off each other extraordinarily well. With the inclusion of Hutcherson (which is quite unique for a soul-jazz date), you know you’re in for something special and this album delivers. I’ve posted a ton of organ-based jazz on this page, so I guess I must be a lover of organ heavy jazz. Who knew. They say, you learn something new every day. I think I just might pull all my BJP albums of the shelf today and, you know, “let em roll”. Happy Sunday spinning, vinyl fiends!
