Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451 is a towering work of literature set in a future dystopian world. We meet its protagonist, Guy Montag, a fireman. No - not the kind we know of today, who run into burning buildings to save lives. No, this type of fireman is one who sets things on fire, namely books. In Bradbury’s story, screens are the dominant device of the age, and books have long gone out of fashion and been banned. People who possess books do so under threat of serious punishment. And it is the job of Montag and the other firemen of his company to go on search and destroy missions, find the books, destroy them and punish the people who hoard them. They are just following orders – have we heard that one before? Until slowly, Montag begins to reconnect with his conscience and we see the transformation of a human, from an automaton following orders to a thinking reasoning being who will act - and one who will soon be on the run.
As with Woolf and Kafka, Bradbury is another favorite of Adam’s, our ONE HIT WONDER protagonist.
