I'm sad and shocked. Also because I didn't expect it. Bad news for breakfast, lunch and dinner is something I deal with trying to digest somehow, everyday, to use my privileges as much as I can for those who are silenced.
But the news that #Koko #TheGorillaWhoTalks died in her sleep on Tuesday, same age as me, shook my unshielded love for #animalcommunication.
And my despise for how #humanity treats other animals with such biblical #supremacism, is awakened by my memories of Koko from the documentary about her that I saw half a decade ago while in #criticalanimalstudies #CAS & #animalcognition studies at Lund university.
As a behavioural scientist I'm intrigued by wheeeen the current human state will evolve into understanding co-animals better, and stop behaving like shit.
And as just me, I'm so heartbreakingly disturbed by how #human #hominids treat other #greatapes - and all life on earth..
Anyway; with recent studies giving more knowledge about how expressions of pain is communication not only among humans,
and about fishes who #communicate with #electricimpulses,
I hope to soon see more #science #news about #telepathy & #telempathy too.
I believe that Koko who was an expert in #signlanguage together with #PennyPatterson, also knew how to pick up thoughts & feelings - better than most humans are aware of the capacity for doing. Knowing when there is an incongruence. This is what caught my attention in the filmed material with Koko, and this is what I would have loved to dedicate myself to, if staying in the university world.
Because even if I know people treat each other horrible and inhumane , ..I still nourish a dream that if people could just learn how to understand other animals, then devastation of their lives, families and habitats would change it's proportions and diminish:
Gorillas would have their right to their forests to start. The way Koko's grandparents were murdered and she grew up behind bars, would stop happening - not only in Africa but also in Asia where orangutangs are forced into homelessness and are tortured and murdered. Etc.
I was just very touched to find out Koko was still alive, and that now she is dead and gone..
