Last night I finally opened a packet of candy I bought at Super Smile grocery store in Fushimi two summers ago, and it's super delicious and wanted to share it with you !
It's called mame-donguri (bean acorns !) because it's shaped and looks like an acorn and has toasted soybeans inside ^ - ^ There are only four ingredients -- sugar, mizuame (a sweet syrup), soybeans, and brown sugar, and the soybeans are non-gmo of course !
The rich flavor is from the Okinawan brown sugar and it's fun to crunch on the nutty beans. They may be a little habit-forming and I just might be hooked !
The company that makes these has been in the candy business since 1962 in Kyōto ☆ So retro ! And I'm so glad to find another candy from Kyōto that's super awesome. (I think that's my favorite place for candy now !) That hot day, I got lost or went too far, or got off at a different train station for fun, or whatever reason which I can't remember-- and happened upon this cute old grocery store and picked up some dinner, a kitty treat to bring home to Mizu and Mochi, a watermelon jelly to have with tea, maybe some cucumbers, and this candy. I wish it would've been closer to home because it was just the best market ! Ah I wish there were a portal nearby so I could go grocery shopping there tonight ! ♪♪ And maybe stop by the tofu shop across the street too ♡
