This quote says so much about emotional literacy, it’s so important to validate people’s feelings and not make them feel guilty for feeling the way they do.
Your feelings are that - they are yours and you’re allowed to feel them.
We are so quick to try and find the silver lining on other people’s behalf when all they need is empathy and a supportive ear to help them to feel better.
We don’t have to fix anything for someone who is feeling a difficult emotion we just need to listen.
If you’re crying and someone tells you not to cry how do you feel?
If you’re angry and someone tells you there’s nothing to be angry about how do you feel?
Validate and empathise with people’s emotions and see the positive connections grow, especially with our children.
Ask yourself, “What would I need if this was me?”.
So if it’s a toddler having a tantrum, a teen imploding, a student misbehaving or a friend in need meet them where they are by acknowledging how they feel, name it, validate it, listen and empathise
