~~~ Montechiaro Castle - Part 2 ~~
_______________________________________________________ If you are wandering if this place is somewhere in South East Asia, the reply is NO! This is Sicily guys and the view is from the Montechiaro Castle! If you don’t know what I’m talking about, read my yesterday post!
As I was saying, the guardian offered us a little detour of the place and showed us the main (still visitable) areas of the castle. Unfortunately, among the many things he told us about this beautiful place there was also the news that without any funding for its ordinary maintenance, the castle will close soon forever.
Because of the weather conditions and previous bad management the castle will no longer be visitable because too dangerous for people. The only way to save it, is to prove the province board management that this castle is visited by people, ergo important for the local community and tourism.
In order to do this, the guardian is collecting signs from visitors for the whole year trying to demonstrate its importance. If you are in the area of Agrigento, please do pay it a visit! It’s free and with a sign you can contribute to save it!
The castle is standing still since 1353, only property of the powerful Chiaramonte family situated on a cliff and built with a Norman style. The beach you can see from the pictures has various names “beach of the castle” or “cala Vincenzina”. It’s quite difficult to reach it. You have to go walking and descend a steep hill. There will be also a final staircase, which is in very bad conditions and not sure it will be there next year.
It’s quite hidden and there are no indications around. The best thing to do, is asking a local to bring you to the access or you will never find it from the main road 🤣 If you are going and need some advice DM me!
