"What is there beyond knowing that keeps
calling to me? I can't

turn in any direction
but it's there. I don't mean

the leaves' grip and shine or even the thrush's
silk song, but the far-off

fires, for example,
of the stars, heaven's slowly turning

theater of light, or the wind
playful with its breath;

or time that's always rushing forward,
or standing still

in the same -- what shall I say --

What I know
I could put into a pack

as if it were bread and cheese, and carry it
on one shoulder,

important and honorable, but so small!
While everything else continues, unexplained

and unexplainable. How wonderful it is
to follow a thought quietly

to its logical end.
I have done this a few times.

But mostly I just stand in the dark field,
in the middle of the world, breathing

in and out. Life so far doesn't have any other name
but breath and light, wind and rain.

If there's a temple, I haven't found it yet.
I simply go on drifting, in the heaven of the grass
and the weeds."

I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived... •

gave me a box full of darkness.
It took me years to understand that this, too, was a gift. ~Mary Oliver

An ex boyfriend sent me this poem in a card after we broke up. Even though he was in pain he was telling me he understood. I still feel moved thinking about it. It came to mind the other day after a conversation with a friend. #thankyoumaryoliver

“This World” by Mary Oliver
I would like to write a poem about the world that has in it
nothing fancy.
But it seems impossible.
Whatever the subject, the morning sun
glimmers it.
The tulip feels the heat and flaps its petals open and becomes a star.
The ants bore into the peony bud and there is a dark
pinprick well of sweetness.
As for the stones on the beach, forget it.
Each one could be set in gold.
So I tried with my eyes shut, but of course the birds
were singing.
And the aspen trees were shaking the sweetest music
out of their leaves.
And that was followed by, guess what, a momentous and
beautiful silence
as comes to all of us, in little earfuls, if we’re not too
hurried to hear it.
As for spiders, how the dew hangs in their webs
even if they say nothing, or seem to say nothing.
So fancy is the world, who knows, maybe they sing.
So fancy is the world, who knows, maybe the stars sing too,
and the ants, and the peonies, and the warm stones,
so happy to be where they are, on the beach, instead of being
locked up in gold.

If Mary Oliver was here today she would write poem about this cloud I'm sure. Instead I wrote something entirely inspired by her poem
" The Summer Day"

Who made this beautiful day?
Who made blue sky and clear water like child's tear?
Who made wind, sand and sea?
This wind who is gently running fingers through my hair,
This golden sand that gave up easily under our many feet,
This sacred sea who is calling us lovingly
to Inhale ... to Exhale.
Who made cloud?
This cloud, I mean
The one who is following me on every step as I walk along the beach
The one who is shape shifting, stretching, flipping and than very slowly ripping... "Tell me, what else should I have done?Doesn't everything die at last, and too soon?Tell me, what is it you plan to do With your one wild and precious life? " #theautumnday#quotestoliveby

Okay, l am a little bit of a podcast junkie. This week I was listening to On Being by Krista Tippit. She interviews incredible minds who are all grappling what it means to be human. I had the opportunity to listen to her interviews with Bessel van der Kolk and Mary Oliver. Two people who have taught me a great deal. .

Mary Oliver was talking about having a difficult childhood that she struggled for many years but that she coped by walking around in the woods of Ohio where she grew up. And then later she spent a lot of time in nature as an adult on Cape Cod walking around with a little notebook writing. And then only like Mary Oliver can, both eloquent and succinct, this gem falls out of her mouth, she says, “I got saved by poetry, and I got saved by the beauty of the world.” .
Later, as I listen to the interview with Bessel van der Kolk and was struck by his words. He said, “ I really do think that trauma contacts you with the best and worst of life. You really do see the horrendous things that people do to each other. And you see resiliency, the power of love, the power of caring, the power of commitment, the power of commitment to oneself, the knowledge of things that are larger than our individual survival. And in some ways, I don’t think that you can appreciate the glory of life unless you also know the dark side.” .
I have been reflecting on these words. And on how our experiences shape us and what it takes to heal. And what happens when you get to the other side of the woods. Or maybe there isn’t another side but that we are all continually healing and in some process along the path. .
I can’t help but marvel about how beauty and tragedy are intertwined so closely in this life. .
At my core, I believe that we all have within us the innate wisdom to heal ourselves. And that we need nature....art....and committed loving people to not only hold us but to help heal us.

Mary Oliver
How could you
have known the musings of my mind, the emotions of my heart and the desire of my spirit to find peace within!

Tomorrow February 1st
is Imbolc.
It is one of the eight
Neo-pagan religious festival to celebrate the phases of the changing seasons.
It is the festival of purification, rebirth and new beginnings.
The time to reconnect with spiritual guides,
purify your intentions,
shed your grey and gloomy cloak,
cleanse, heal and bless. •

Wild Geese
Mary Oliver
You do not have to be good.
You do not have to walk on your knees
for a hundred miles through the desert repenting.
You only have to let the soft animal of your body
love what it loves.
Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine.
Meanwhile the world goes on.
Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain
are moving across the landscapes,
over the prairies and the deep trees,
the mountains and the rivers.
Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean blue air,
are heading home again.
Whoever you are, no matter how lonely,
the world offers itself to your imagination,
calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting -
over and over announcing your place
In the family of things. ---

Some of her famous quotes:
Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?
Instructions for living a life. Pay attention. Be astonished. Tell about it.
When it's over, I want to say: all my life I was a bride married to amazement. I was the bridegroom, taking the world into my arms. ---

Our office conversations keep wandering back to Mary Oliver's impact on our work and our lives, especially with this #winterstorm and "its white / rhetoric everywhere" (from her poem "First Snow"). Another poem of hers, "Messenger", is in the latest episode of #RewriteRadio, read and adapted by writer Kathleen Dean Moore.

Listen to the full episode about the art of spiritual nature writing wherever you find your podcasts.

Travel well , Mary Oliver ... You were one of the true torchbearers, the bringer of illumination, compassion, and understanding ... You made the world 'more', just by showing us how to truly see and 'pay attention', how to be still and truly listen, how to walk quietly in our aloneness. ... You will be missed by many, ... You will contend that you were never gone. #thankyoumaryoliver, #,maryoliver, #youmadeusmore

✨the black oaks
fling their bronze fruit
into all the pockets of the earth pock pock
they knock against the thresholds
the roof the sidewalk
fill the eaves the bottom line
of the old gold song
of the almost finished year
what is spring all that tender green stuff
compared to this
falling of tiny oak trees
out of the oak trees then the clouds
gathering thick along the west
then advancing
then closing over breaking open
the silence
then the rain
dashing its silver seeds against the house✨

Meet Merle Shepherd(mix), a/k/a Merlin 🧙‍♂️ We both have broken hearts. 💔 He was found in Southern CA over a month ago and has been moved through several shelters up the west coast. He’s somewhere between 3 & 5 years old, according to the vets.

I didn’t mean to get another dog yet, although I certainly knew we would at some point. We had things of Layla’s to donate. I got on the internet to scope the shelters here in Portland. And when I saw his face, I just knew. I tried to talk myself out of it. I looked through every single posting of every other shelter dog in this town, certain I would want to go get most of them, but I only felt drawn to him. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Grief is a doorway in to your deepest heart. Grief has helped me live better. It’s been almost a decade since I lost my mother, and sometimes that grief still feels so sharp. I know it’s not “supposed” to go away, and knowing that helps me just be with it when it’s there (all the poetry on impermanence helps, too). I feel so much pain and so much love simultaneously, and they don’t have to be at odds.

When we got Merle home, I immediately thought I was a crazy person, and I was mad at Josh for going along with my hair-brained impulsiveness, but shortly afterwards I flipped right to this poem (grieving Mary Oliver, too), and I knew again in my heart that it was somehow perfect. “There’s nothing more pathetic than caution when headlong might save a life.’” #merleshepherdmix #brokenheartsclub #greif #moments #maryoliver #thankyoumaryoliver #dogsongs

The Gardener *
By Mary Oliver 1935-2019 *
[my favorite arranger of words] *

Have I lived enough? *
Have I loved enough? *
Have I considered Right Action enough,
have I come to any conclusion? *
Have I experienced happiness with sufficient gratitude? *
Have I endured loneliness with grace? *

I say this, or perhaps I'm just *
thinking it. *
Actually, I probably think too much. *
Then I step out into the garden, *
where the gardener, who is said to *
be a simple man, is tending his *
children, the roses. * #thankyoumaryoliver #thegardener

... Because this exquisite line of poetry deserves its own post.

The gifted Mary Oliver... could see the magic in the mundane. She could sit outdoors and be so present that she could interpret the song of the Earth as it sang in a language most of us have forgotten.

She wasn’t too busy or too important to use her senses for what they were created... to SEE. To HEAR. To FEEL. To TASTE. To TOUCH. To be fully alive.

And her poetry is the gift of that presence to the world. And we are blessed indeed. So many times I have turned to Ms. Oliver’s poems that speak of birds and bugs and swamps and storms... to better understand my own heart.
She was an alchemist of the soul. Turning trees into wise sages and animals into divine teachers. Or perhaps she was always just seeing things as they really were.

Thank you Mary. We are so blessed you passed through this life with your heart and eyes wide open... and picked up a pen.

When I am among the trees, especially the willows and the honey locust, equally the beech, the oaks and the pines, they give off such hints of gladness. I would almost say that they save me, and daily. 🌲

I am so distant from the hope of myself, in which I have goodness, and discernment, and never hurry through the world but walk slowly, and bow often. 🌲

Around me the trees stir in their leaves
and call out, “Stay awhile.”
The light flows from their branches. 🌲

And they call again, “It’s simple,” they say, “and you too have come into the world to do this, to go easy, to be filled with light, and to shine.” 🌲

Poetry alongside me ... a few of the ‘thousand particulars’ ... learning to patch a few words together. #thankyoumaryoliver #namaste @twbpoetry @jandbcoffee #sensuouslanguage #practicalpoetry #imageandword #embodiment @pacificapost

I only heard today that Mary Oliver passed away on Thursday. It caught me by surprise and I have to say made me sad. I came to her poetry late , when ,like many people who love her work ,needed it most. I would sit in the Leo Mol garden , and slowly feel her voice , her words encouraging me to find mine , to dance with life , to free myself of the hostage that we all sometimes can become. It was said that she would wake up every morning and head out with pencil and notebook in hand ,ready to commune with what nature would reveal . I like to think that she’s unpacking right now , like the diligent student, revelling in whatever death has to offer , “ .....blackness ...light ...a whistling wren ??? And while I’m sad I’ll never read of those experiences , I’m grateful for what she gave . A generous , unrelenting sense of curiosity of how to love and live and die , “....a bride married to amazement “ not blindly , or cursory , but a get down in the dirt and scrub away at the nooks and crannies despite or in spite of the the bleak and sometimes thought - less singular narrative that life may present; open , ready. ...!! ☺️she was / is an important poet for me ! If you’ve read this far I hope you like her too .Swipe right for a few of her poems .Happy Sunday🥰 ! #restincuriousabundancemaryoliver #thankyoumaryoliver. #maryoliver 📸 google
