Photo by @lynseyaddario | Nicole Black holds her grandson Jacob Flowers. A week after Jacob’s birth by C-section, his mother, Crystle Galloway, developed complications. Black called 911, but her daughter was not transported to the hospital by ambulance. Black drove her there instead. Galloway died five days later. Black’s hand rests on the urn containing her daughter’s ashes. The responding medics were disciplined for not following standard operating procedures, and one was fired. During my career as a photojournalist I have documented maternal mortality across the developing world, but for my most recent @natgeo story, ‘Giving Life Can Still Be Deadly,’ I spent several months focusing on this issue at home in the U.S. and in Somaliland. The U.S. is one of only two developed countries where the rate of women dying from pregnancy has gotten worse since 1990. The rate of maternal deaths remains stubbornly high in the United States: about 14 deaths for every 100,000 live births. Black mothers are particularly at risk. Better basic care could help, as it has in the developing world.

Photo by Cory Richards @coryrichards // #sponsored by @IncredibleIndia // I’ve never felt smaller than sitting on a beach in the Andaman Islands. Being in the high mountains pales in comparison to the vastness of the sea. There is something that is both comforting and unsettling in its ceaseless rhythm. To me, standing on a beach is like standing at the confluence of ALL life on earth and as such is a stark reminder of just how small we really are the grand scheme of things. Stars and storm clouds sweep over the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, India, at the juncture of the Andaman Sea and the Bay of Bengal. // From mountain tops to seacoasts, India is filled with breathtaking landscapes, amazing wildlife, and untamed experiences you’ll never forget. Plan your adventure of a lifetime now in #UntamedIndia.

Golden Reflection | Photograph by Jassen Todorov (@jassensf)
“This aerial image, taken from a plane at sunset, features Discovery Bay, California, a waterfront community built on a network of man-made dikes surrounded by freshwater, except for the southeast quadrant, which comprises of the Discovery Bay Country Club golf course,” writes #YourShotPhotorapher Jassen Todorov. “Some homes have private docks with access to the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta." This photo was selected for the December 14, 2018 edition of our Photos of the Week series.

“I always love your aerial moments, but this one is one of my favorites because of the magical reflections that change throughout the frame. The punch of warmth from the clouds has an awesome contrast to the neutral tones on the neighborhoods. Simply lovely!” — @natgeoyourshot Associate Photo Editor Kristen McNicholas (@kemcnicholas)
