When there's a large commotion involving seabirds above-and-on Bruny's surrounding waters, it usually comprises Australasian Gannets ( Morus serrator ). These slick and meticulously groomed aerial fishers are always on the lookout for vulnerable surface dwellers and congregating 'bait balls' (a spherical swimming pattern adopted by schooling fish as a last-ditch countereffort to avoid encircling predators), usually instigated by Dolphins herding the panicked fish towards the surface to limit options of individual escape—it's at this point the undisputed kings of bombing dive into action.
Capable of dive descents from around 30 metres, Gannets draw their wings tightly back beyond their tail-feathers moments before impact, converting themselves from a missile recorded at 100km/h to an underwater torpedo reaching depths of 12 metres assisted by wing-flap propulsion to pursue and catch their prey.

Mushy puffin with a nice batch of fresh sand eels basking in the late afternoon sun. Probably trying to figure out where to start to find its burrow as the island of Skomer hosts quite a few of these adorable birds. Finding home after a fishing trip out at sea can be a real hassle!

A difficult bird to get in the right light. Completely black and particularly skittish upon approach. But get that angle and reveal some beautiful feather patterns on the nape of the Smooth-billed Ani.
