Some of The best advice I ever received as a young nurse was to "put up your shield."
Many nurses are empaths who get the energy sucked right out of them from patients, family, and coworkers. Feeling drained, exhausted and soon jaded.. When I was taught to put up a shield- A conscious extension of my energy, I was changed.
I could still be present, and listen, and empathize, but I no longer absorbed others energy, or let mine be taken.
Sorry, sir. I'm gonna need all this energy to get through the rest of my twelve hour day. But order an extra cookie with your meal and I'll come back and hear all about how no other pain medicine but the one that starts with a D works for you.
