“Everything that is trying to kill you, harm you, cause you suffering and is evil that is God. It’s best to avoid God. The best way to do this is through Art...”-from notes on Arthur Schopenhauer. Recently while presenting ideas for a public art project I referred to what we’d be creating as a cheerful The Gates of Hell by August Rodin. I first saw the Gates on a class trip to the Philadelphia around ‘84. Philly has one of the three original bronze casts of the piece.
I was always struck by the sense of moment and flow, areas of wispy lightness, and the thoughtful empathy such a heavy medium and physically large piece could elicit in a viewer. The complexity of choices of darkness and lightness playing within the organic versus the severity of the grid of the door structures have always served as inspiration. It’s stunner, singlehandedly worth a visit to Philly.
