On February 9, 1979, Paramount Pictures released the cult classic 'The Warriors.' The film was directly inspired by the New York City street gangs of the late 60's and early 70's, led of course by the gangs of it's northernmost borough...the Bronx. Some of the actual gang members who inspired the film were used as extras during production. None of them were credited. So, a special shout out to some of the originators:
The Ghetto Brothers (BX)
The Savage Nomads (BX)
The Savage Skulls (BX)
The Blacks Spades (BX)
The Bachelors (BX)
The Black Assassins (BX)
The Peacemakers (BX)
The Roman Kings (BX)
The Javelins (BX)
The Turbans (BX)
The Reapers (BX)
The Seven Immortals (BX)
The Golden Guineas (N. Bronx)

By 1970, the South Bronx was a slum, where thousands of impoverished Black and Puerto Rican families were trapped. There were few city services provided. Trash went uncollected, and a new epidemic was spreading: arson. But what the residents of what is still the poorest congressional district in the country didn't know was that there was much money to be made in a slum. A large occupied apartment building could at that time be purchased for less than $1,000 dollars. By taking advantage of the city's three year tax moratorium, slum lords could collect several thousand dollars of rent a month, while paying no taxes. Profits were increased by reducing services to tenants. Heat was cut off in the winter. No maintenance was provided or repairs made. Empty promises were made that more would be done in order to keep the rents coming in, until the tenants would give up hope and stop paying all together. At that point, landlords would pay $200 dollars to a junkie for an arson job. Since federal subsidized fire insurance was required by law (and the South Bronx was considered a high risk investment), a quick settlement with few administrative questions asked allowed for $75,000 to $80,000 profits. That would be $500,000 in 2017, adjusted for inflation.
