Float on

1

But today there was no way I was trying anything nuts and based on the time of day and what the water was doing I cautiously came to the conclusion things were unlikely to kick up at this point in the day. Clouds had planted themselves firmly in the sky and didn't seem to moving. Even if it did start to blow it likely wouldn't last long enough to actually get dangerous. Hopefully anyway.
I have to admit the decision to going on did have a bit of bias to it. There was a handsome reward at the other end. If I could just make it the 20k tonight, I would get to stay in a cabin! I hadn't been indoors in nearly two weeks at that point and after what I'd been through. It would a great place to dry out and compose myself before paddling the last 18k back to Bella Coola. It would have me back a day later than I was expected but we did give a days variance for bad weather. After all, it was Bella Coola.
I had been fantasizing about the cabin since I fell a few kilometers short of it the first night out. I had to wait until late for the wind to stop that day so only got going around 8pm. Instead of doing the crossing to it in the dark and go the bit off course it would take me I decided it was a better idea to sleep in little beach I remembered seeing on a previous trip to the area. I wanted to start early the next morning anyway and figured I'd sleep in if I was in the cabin. Instead I figured I'd have a shitty cold sleep so I would want to get moving right away first thing in the morning. So I just got out of my boat and wearing shorts and a dry top, wrapped myself in my hammock and slept on top of my boat. The goal was to have a 4am start to avoid any chance of the junction of the channels being messy. But when my alarm went off at 4am I was so cold I got out my sleeping bag and "warmed up" for another hour and a half.

Since then I had thought about staying there if I could on the way back. I hadn't been there in a few years and had even promised a friend who appreciated the cabin like I did that I would take pictures of it for him. But over the last day and a half I had started to obsess over it and it was literally what had been keeping me going to this point.

Packrafting was invented in Alaska to reach remote waterways that would otherwise be impossible to get a boat to. We still practice this tradition today.
-
"When I first acquired my packraft from kokopelli, my mind raced with ideas. To this point, I've achieved almost all of them. I’d vowed to float creeks, cross rivers, and float Alaska’s numerous lakes. However, I never expected that my greatest attraction to the raft came in the form of floating things that people may have never floated before. I guess this story goes a way back.

Ever since I became interested in the outdoors I had always been interested in reaching lofty places people have never set foot before. The true and utter definition of exploration. This idea was spoken romantically to me in the form of books. Amundsen and Shackleton, with reaching the poles. Messner with reaching the highest summits on Earth. Ever since reading about these heroes this has been my goal and dream. A dream which can never fill me fully. Thanks to Alaska’s vastness I believe there’s been many places I’ve stood where maybe just maybe people have never stood before. Now thanks to my Kokopelli packraft I’m almost certain that I have floated virgin waters for the first time ever, on a couple of occasions." - @lukekonarzewski

Alright back to the Burke Channel, if you're just joining the party then this story starts about a dozen posts ago and can be followed pretty easily despite a few random posts, here's were I left off-

The morning skies were heavy, low and threatening and stuck around most of the day. Despite the bad weather keeping the winds down and random visits from the resident dolphins I was still a wreck from the night before. The same forecast I hadn't given too much though to before the storm said that today as well as yesterday had the potential for thunderstorms. The sky continued to bully me throughout the day. Teasing me with spells of rain that I dreaded would escalate but thankfully it's bark was worse than it's bite.
On the positive side, the notorious outflow winds that plague the Burke Channel and give it the reputation it deserves were kept away by the clouds and I was able to paddle to the head of the channel without further incident. I even heard the crackle of a radio conversation between two fishing boats , I got on my radio and asked if they copied me and they responded! All of a sudden I want completely alone out there and this false sense of security allowed me to finally relax a little bit.

It took about 4 hours of fighting the tide to paddle the final 15k out of the narrow channel and now I was faced with a new dilemma. I was at the only spot to camp for about 20k and not only that. I was actually in a much more compromising section of water then the Burke channel if I continued on. This area around "The Nose" was not to be underestimated. The visual landmark of this smoothed granite cliff was pretty much the center of chaos where the Dean, the Burke and the Labouchere channels all met on one side of it and the North and South Bentict arms draining into Bentict arm on the other. Throughout the day between winds tides and currents from every direction possible the area becomes a more and more serious place to be. If you knew the area and knew I was thinking of crossing it around mid afternoon you'd likely think I was nuts.

Goodbye my loooove

9

Ok so I know my posts have been all over the place lately as I have been all over the place myself. I've been travelling since June and have covered a huge chunk of the West Coast of North America from the Washington/Oregon border all the way up to Anchorage. Unfortunately this has caused a few people to think that the story about Kwanta Inlet and the Burke Channel I've been telling over a handful of posts recently is current when it was actually about a month ago or so. It's been hard to tell the story while travelling around because my cell coverage and wifi had been speratic at best and I was without a phone for a couple weeks when I broke it in the Yukon. Anyway the bulk of my travel is over with and I will generally have the ability to post regularly and share all my tales from my summer including the conclusion of my battle with the mighty Burke Channel. Spoiler alert! I survived! Haha. I'll get back to that story later today or tomorrow but for now another random picture from the day I broke my phone in the Yukon. I hiked about 30k into the base of the Kaskawulsh Glacier to paddle the lake that had formed there and hike/paddle the drainage back out Even breaking my phone, it was one of the best trips of the summer. I'm sure you can see why

Sorry for the delay, continued from my last post-

The next morning I got on the water much later than I was hoping to. When my alarm went off at 3am, it was followed quickly by to flashes of lightning that struck before I could even get out of my tent. Still shook up from the previous day.i just huddled back deep into my sleeping bag and prayed the storm would end soon.
The rain eventually stopped but it was a few hours later. I emerged from my tent and got ready as quickly as I could as I knew the storm or a dreaded headwind could kick up at any moment. Still it took me forever to get ready. As much as I knew I had to get back out there I didn't want to. I was still so freaked out from the day before and skies were still very threatening, implying that the storm may not quite be finished. Either way I had to get as far as I could, I had to get out of this bloody channel.
But that isn't necessarily that easy. The junction ahead where 4 channel all meet was a notoriously bad area of water. Usually only navigable in the early morning before the events of the day create a soupy mess of giant waves coming from every direction and nowhere to get out. There was an area to camp just before it about 15-20k from where I was. Timidly I put my boat in the water hoping I could at least get that far today before things got messy. Shaking as I gripped my paddle tensely, I started down the channel

As the thunder and lightning grew closer to me I knew I wasn't going to make it to the old log dump around the point and even if I had, there was no guarantee I could actually get out there. I had no choice and headed towards the steep uninviting shoreline to look for anything, any landing at all that could fit my tent. To make matters worse the storm closed in quickly and intensified dramatically. Thunder bellowed right over me as lightning started to strike closer and closer to me with each strike. Everytime I braced waiting for my boat to burst and leave me stranded in front of this cliff or worse. I tried to get someone on the radio in case and nothing, I couldn't even get the coastguard on the radio between my remote local and the weather. I was truly on my own. Lightning struck the water what must have been 30 more times as I combed the shoreline desperately. The sky really darkened and opened up like nothing I had ever felt before. The rain was so much in volume that it actually seemed to soak into my dry top. I was starting to lose it when I finally saw something that might work. There was a rock/avalanche chute that went all the way to the water that had deposited some rock at the base at some point that had been pushed around by the tide to form a small rock landing. Not the safest option but I had no other choice. It was either chance another rock/snow avalanche from the heavy rains or stay on the water where my fate seemed sealed. In desperation I set up on the rocks doing my best to kept it together. I was so cold ,wet and scared and had never felt so vulnerable in my life. I huddled up in my sleeping bag as the rain pelted heavily at my tent but I was able to put it and the looming dangers of the steep face and potential tide issues out of my mind long enough to fall asleep. Tomorrow if everything went well I would be up at 3am to try and get past the intense 5 channel junction that lay ahead before I could get back to Bella Coola before the winds started. Lost to think about and lots to deal with still just to get back to civilization still 50 kilometers away. The one good thing about my campsite was at least I didn't have to worry about bears...

As the sky behind me grew darker I looked ahead to a series of rainbows that kept appearing in front of me. Taking this as a sign I followed the rainbows hoping they would lead to flat ground more than a pot of gold. This was the last one I saw and I assumed it to be around where I had hoped to stop. An overgrown log dump that would hopefully allow some sort of refuge from the daunting cliffs that loomed to my right. The water had become extremely calm as the pressure built in the air. I knew a storm was coming and the distant thunder and lightning confirmed it. I had no choice but to push on and hope that luck was on my side.

I miss you, Montana

Now back to the Great Bear Rainforest. The daunting skies approaching made for some great pics but I knew I had to get off the water soon. But the issue was I that I was still a few hours away from land and the land I was closest too was the giant mountainous ridge from a few posts ago. I headed blindly towards the wall hoping to find some sort of refuge as the darkness started to take over the rest of the sky...

4

It was a year ago I found myself each morning climbing from my tent out into the rains of the North. It seems life was the opposite then. I shivered each moment I stopped moving, soaked to the core from a leaking dry suit and endless rain. The brief moments of sun created a vibrancy beneath the clouds and I would soak in the small glimmer of warmth. To soon be overcome by another distant storm. There was no fear of people up here, but rather the wilds. The weather, it bit as deep as the grizzlies and the vastness coursed on like the migrating Terns.
“Have you suffered, starved and triumphed, grovelled down, yet grasped at glory,
Grown bigger in the bigness of the whole? 'Done things' just for the doing, letting babblers tell the story,
Seeing through the nice veneer the naked soul?
Have you seen God in His splendours, heard the text that nature renders?
(You'll never hear it in the family pew.)
The simple things, the true things, the silent men who do things–
Then listen to the wild–it's calling you.” #robertservice

As we paddle past Standing Rock I can’t help but think upon my motivations for so much of what I document. I look back on exploring the Noatak preserve in northern Alaska, mere moments after it was removed from the protected list, accompanied by 18 other parks and protected wilderness. The land untouched as I paddled along its shores. The animals more curious of us then fearful. Seeing that natural tree line appear for the first time on the horizon, turning the flat tundra into a jagged saw. A land few know of and less care for. A land we are meant to protect will soon be forever scared by a new roadway planned to cut directly through. Allowing a Canadian mine to be turned into an open pit. Bringing noise to a silent land, people to an untouched place, and destruction to the pristine wilds. But unlike Standing Rock, there will be no picket line, no riot, no news story, this wilderness has only its animals, it’s rivers and mountains, to stand in the way of this progress. “Earth provides enough to satisfy every man's needs, but not every man's greed.” #gandhi
