#sdg spotlight Sunday!
Sustainable Development Goal 1 is to end poverty in all its forms everywhere. Communities and governments around the world have made great strides already, with families on less than $1.90 per person a day falling from 26.9% in 2000 to 9.2% in 2017 and 2013 level of extreme poverty at a third of what it was in 1990. .
Of course, there is much work to be done to reach our #globalgoals by 2030. The latest global estimate suggest that 11% of the world population, or 783 million people, lived below the extreme poverty threshold in 2013. Only 45% of the world’s population were effectively covered by at least one social protection cash benefit in 2016. In 2017, economic losses attributed to disasters were estimated at over $300B. .
Poverty is more than the lack of income and resources to ensure a sustainable livelihood. Its manifestations include hunger and malnutrition, limited access to education and other basic services, social discrimination and exclusion as well as the lack of participation in decision-making. Economic growth must be inclusive to provide sustainable jobs and promote equality.
All that to say, we got this. Communities around the world are taking action. And, it is from these #local actions that we, as a global #community, will reach our goals. Comment below with how you and your community are working to address SDG1. .
