I decided last minute to “summit” Cooper. Although the trails, getting there, are quite visible and marked, many weren’t labeled (with trail #s) so I was very grateful that I brought along a map-I don’t think it really mattered anyway, common sense says, “go up.” Once at Cloud Cap, it was pretty basic, to “go up.” Some very friendly climbers I bumped into at the campsite actually gave me directions for a shortcut. It definitely was a shortcut. It avoided nearly all of the switchbacks, which cut approximately 1 mile off my journey. Yup, it was to hike across the ridge (or is that called a bench?) that paralleled Eliot Glacier, climb/ scramble up to the other bench and join a fraction of the Cooper Spur Trail. By that point, it was up the bench to the following (not in this order): Tie-in Rock, rock shelters, an engraved rock, and a plaque. Once up there, you can see 3 of the other volcanoes in central Oregon (Jefferson and ??) and 3 volcanoes in Washington (St. Helens, Rainier, Adams). To get back, I actually followed the Cooper Spur Trail almost all the way because I wanted to see the full rock shelter (the others were rock walls) and I wanted to get some shade-The sun was out in full force. *It’s good if you can have someone leave your car at Cloud Cap or Tilly Jane if you don’t want to hike all the way back down to the Cooper Spur resort area. ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
Between flying back and forth for projects, it has been a great summer of adventuring so far. My goal is to have a total of a at least a month (or more: 30+ days) of outdoor fun during the summer (in Oregon alone). So far, so good! But where to next
Duties around the house: 0 completed. Bucket List of hikes, trip, and adventures in Oregon (when present): 6/7 days (in need of a rest day, which is today).
5 things you can control daily: 1) Your attitude, 2) Your words, 3) Your manners, 4) Your actions, & 5) Your effort.
