Today, @guardian reported on the crisis that female Boko Haram escapees face. For many, social and political conditions make survival outside the camps impossible, meaning their only option is to return. We support projects like this 👆a programme that gives former 'Boko Haram wives' the skills to become seamstresses and run their own businesses. They may not rebuild the economy or rebalance a deeply patriarchal society, but they offer opportunities and futures where none were before - not only for the women, but for their children and local communities too.

Programs like this, in Nigeria, give girls the skills and knowledge to establish their own businesses and become financially independent. Every dress makes a difference.

Amanda, 16, is one of the girls interviewed this week by Veja magazine, article written by João Batista Jr. The teenager is part of a country's growing statistics: Brazil is the fourth leading country in child marriages. She fell in love with Mateus, her 21 years old husband, when she was 14 and got pregnant right away. "I lost my baby at its fifth month pregnancy and as soon as the 1 month recovery period was over I was pregnant again", she explains. At the time, her parents allowed the marriage as long as Mateus promissed them he would never hit her. "My mother told me to get back home if he ever laid a hand on me". Nowadays, Amanda is fully committed to raise their son, also named Mateus, 8 months old at the time of my interviewing her. "Even if Mateus left me I wouldn't care. I always wanted to be a mother and now I am what I wanted to be". Article published at Veja Magazine on 01/11/19 - Written by João Batista Jr. - Pictures by me @flaviavalsani

Photo by Stephanie Sinclair @stephsinclairpix @tooyoungtowed // Fourteen-year-old twin sisters Hassana and
Hussaina, were abducted and held captive by Boko Haram until they escaped. Boko Haram, a militant Islamist
group, began it’s insurgency against the Nigerian government in 2009. The terrorist group drew global outrage after
abducting more than 270 schoolgirls from the town of Chibok. Many of the girls were forced into marriage and
motherhood. The Borno State National Emergency Agency estimates thousands more women and girls have also been kidnapped by militants in less-publicized attacks. In armed conflicts, child marriage is increasingly used as a
weapon of war, forcing girls to give birth give birth to the next generation of fighters.

Photo by @amivitale. Under the Taliban regime, education was permitted only for girls under the age of 8 and they were only allowed to learn the Koran. Since then, education has been a prime objective by donors and the Afghan government but despite some improvement, the numbers of girls going to school are still among the lowest in the world. According to Human rights watch an estimated two-thirds of Afghan girls do not attend school. Millions more girls are in school today than were in school under Taliban rule but there is a long way to go.

The United Nations has called the war in Yemen the world's worst humanitarian crisis, and a recent UN report estimated that more than two-thirds of Yemeni girls are now being married off before 18, compared to 50 percent before the start of the conflict. When a child becomes a bride, she loses the chance to go to school, the right to make decisions about her health, and the ability to determine her future. [SWIPE LEFT] Child marriage is fuelled by many things—mainly, gender inequality. It is the common belief that girls and women are somehow inferior to boys and men.
Due to the patriarchal values that exist in society, men have always felt the need to exert control over the female sexuality by directing girls and women on how they should think, act and dress.
