Am I having a #lesney day today? Looks like it. I was born in 1972 & so was a #1970s child. I grew up in the UK & #matchbox was one of the best sources for toy cars. There were others around too if you looked, but these were the easiest to get. The main thing for me though was realism. In the early 1970s realistic models started to give way to some very unusual ones. I was a big fan of the MB29 Racing Mini. Launched in 1970 it lasted until 1975 in the basic range. It then popped back up in the twin pack series from 1976-1981 being towed by a Toe Joe as TP-6. I had 1 as a kid, & I loved it. It got more than a little playworn. As it was finishing it's basic range run, the designers decided it was time to give the MB11 Flying Bug a playmate. Proposals for another vehicle with a huge head sticking out had been ongoing since the first one had arrived 3 years earlier. Mock-ups exist of "Concorde", based on the Citroen SM casting with wings down the sides, & a head sticking out the top. A few different designs based on the Jeep Hot Rod were floated about as either a canopy style or convertible, again with a massive head on top. But in the end they plumped for Mini Ha-Ha. Using the basis of the Racing Mini, the wheel arches were flared, rear wheels jacked up, additional exhausts added sticking out the rear, a large fan engine at the front & a huge head. It was going to replace the MB45 Ford Group 6 in 1975, but at the last minute it replaced the MB14 Iso Grifo instead. It lasted until 1981 so obviously wasn't a poor seller. I also had one of these as a kid, but I was not a fan. I just didn't like it. It didn't get so much playworn as chucked around & buried at the back of the toy box. So damaged, but in a different way. Thankfully when it was finally retired in 1981 we never saw a large head sticking out the top of a model again.
