It's #wisdomwednesday! This month we're focusing on practical wisdom.
For those of us who deal with anxiety, we know all too well how easy it is for our nervous systems to switch into panic mode. It is important to learn self-soothing techniques that help your body get back to "regular programming" and out of fight or flight.
There are 3 switches in your body that are a great place to start. First, breathing in through your nose triggers your parasympathetic nervous system, which is the opposite of fight or flight.
Second, a deep breath that engages your diaphragm, the muscle under your lungs, helps reset your blood flow away from your limbs (where it goes in panic mode) and back to nourishing your digestive system and other internal organs.
This can be simply a deep breath or else a hard exhale (like they do in karate). Finally, giving your hands and feet a shake will run off the adrenaline and excess blood sugar and signal to your body that you are finished with the panic and ready to start producing those things at a regular rate again, so you don't get stuck in excessive highs or lows of adrenaline, endorphins, or blood sugar.
Give these three exercises a try and see if it helps soothe your body and move out of fight or flight mode. Let us know if you have other techniques that help you self regulate!
