Rant alert: I love our national parks. I want others to cherish the treasure that we have. These two wildflowers were just off the path on the tundra, about 11,000 feet elevation. It’s still early in the season, so I only saw two or three other flowers the rest of our time in high altitude.
Ten minutes after I took this picture, as I was about to back out of the parking lot, I saw a young man bend down and pick the flowers.
It seems like a minor thing, but I was dismayed, for at least two reasons:
First, it was rude and thoughtless. Literally thousands of people will walk that path today, and they won’t get to see the delicate beauty of mountain tundra wildflowers.
Second, it’s illegal to pick flowers in our national parks. The young man probably didn’t know that.
Our national parks are more popular than ever. We need to enjoy their beauty, and leave them beautiful for the next visitors.
End of rant.
