Pics of the #alexandernevskycathedral at night is a must when arriving late into #sofia. Named after the #russian prince when #bulgaria was liberated from the #ottoman #turks during the Russo-Turkish War in late 1800’s. #bulgarian #orthodox is the national religion in #bulgaria. A few blocks away is a #russianorthodox #cathedral called the Church of St Nicholas the Miracle Maker... the statue is the monument of #tsarsamuil in honor of the Bulgarian ruler in the first century.
There is so much history in the beautiful country of Bulgaria. It’s been 3 years since I’ve last visited and I was pleasantly surprised by how much has changed, especially in #plovdiv, which I’ll share about later. With a long history that dates back to the #thracians, Bulgaria has a storied history of being ruled and occupied by outsiders. However, and this is based upon my one trip back after going for multiple years, I do believe that Bulgaria is turning a corner and has a promising future as a point of destination.
