Meeting THE Michael Van Valkenburgh last night at a Detroit Riverfront community meeting was a rousing reminder of the hard work required to make magic happen. MVV and his team are my version of stadium tour rockstars. Some of the most magical moments of my life have taken place in the spaces the MVV team designed: long runs along the Chicago lakefront with a victorious finish line at Maggie Daley Park; walking through the landscape of the @thebushcenter with my mom during our girls trip to Dallas; oogling the archway in the City Arch River Park with @shreve57 during a college journo conference; riding bikes to the Pennsylvania Ave plaza so John & I could pose in our #TweedRide duds during the DC salad days; linking up with @slowpez8 in Union Square for our NYC rendezvous; and walking with @thfrench along the Hudson River Park during frosty @publichumans field trip adventures. Spacial memories? Yes. Special memories, too.
I’ve been feeling off kilter the last few weeks. Not in the place I want to be on several fronts. Meeting MVV reminded me that sometimes you have to *build* the place you want — and ask your community for help.
Thanks to @mwallace313 for making this photo possible.
