Man it feels crazy to be holding this piece of paper right now. I’m usually not one for longwinded Instagram captions, but bear with me for a sec on this one.
When I decided to go back to school in 2014, I was super reluctant at first to be giving up so much of my time to pursue something that most people my age had done almost a decade earlier. Was post secondary education going to be worth all the time and effort and sleepless nights and over-caffeination? Would I gain the knowledge, experience and opportunity that I knew I needed to push my career to the next level?
The answer is a resounding “hell yes.” Over the course of four years, I grew from a secluded one-man band working from a lonely home office into a part of a thriving community of designers with big ambitions for the future. I won’t lie, at times things got pretty tough and overwhelming - being the first cohort of a brand new degree program brought its own challenges for both students and faculty, but I wouldn’t trade the experience for the world. I gained a family of designers that I went into battle with every day, and four years later we’ve come out on the other side with the chops to take on the world. To my BDes family, I’m so proud of how far we’ve come - you all continued to blow me away with your progress over the past four years, and I can’t wait to see what you do next.
To my amazingly supportive parents and family, thank you for being the inspiration and driving force that led me down this path in the first place. To my wonderful girlfriend, thank you for bearing with my endless hours of work and being the best thing in the world to come home to every night. And to every single client, company and friend that has taken a chance on working with me, you’re the reason I’m a designer and I can’t thank you enough for giving me the playground I get to play in every day.
K wow that was a novel. If you’ve actually read all of this, big ups. Our graduating class is hosting a little open house event at Conestoga tomorrow evening - if you’re interested in coming by and seeing the fruits of our labour, shoot me a message.
That’s it for me now. Bring it on world, I’m hungry. Joschka out ✌️
